All,

BACKGROUND
- I am trying to achieve move of the "blacked out" look for the grill area of the Ranger. That said, I looking for a possible alternative to either painting, wrapping, or buying a new black lower valence, cost depending.

QUESTION
- Looking to see if anyone has gone the route of removing/stripping the paint off of the lower valence and left it bare?

LINE OF THINKING
- In a perfect world, underneath the paint, it should be flat black molded plastic similar to the other trim around it (based on the fact that one can order a black unpainted lower valence from the Ford dealerships and/or distributors). Also thinking the unpainted plastic MAY hide chips, nicks, scratches then the alternatives (but I defer to the subject matter experts on this). A search revealed that there are many posts regarding the lower valence, but nothing specifically regarding removing/stripping the paint that I was able to find.

Thanks in Advance,

cfhgarza,

I (perhaps mistakenly) thought it was was sprayed on color/paint. I have one or two nicks that show what I perceive to be black underneath but anything is possible.

When you buy one brand new it comes unpainted, but has black primer as a base. You could leave as is, but I would cover it with something. Like I said, I had mine Rhinolined.

Mtnbikes,

Thanks for the gouge. I am hoping to avoid purchasing a new one but it may come down to just that.

I want to take mine off and paint it. How hard was the removal?

Mine came black, don’t remove the paint, either have it painted or wrapped over the existing color.

wrap it. it’s easy enough to do.

something got on my silver one and turned the paint to jelly, so after i cleaned and sanded off the bad paint- got a dead nuts matched silver wrap and redid it.
having said that- i got a brand new on on my shelf- i see no primer on it, its just black plastic. (the one i have at least)
one on the shelf was my backup if i had to get a new one painted.

Lariat2021,

If you are referring to the actual removal of the lower valance, not overly difficult. I believe I found the removal procedures on this forum (which is a wealth of information and worth its weight in gold). Remember--A little patience and finesse goes a long way.

Wolfman00,

Appreciate the advice. I have definitely considered this as an alternative but wanted to see if there was a cheaper alternative method first.
