Turns out that didn't matter much. From what I understand, it imploded right around the time they lost contact with the surface ship. Honestly, probably a better way to go than waiting around 96 hours to die...
Agreed.

I saw an interview yesterday where an expert on submersibles said 2 very interesting things:
  • Since the 1960's when deep submersibles started being used, there has never been a loss of vehicle - but those submersibles had all been certified by standards organizations for deep dives.
  • This submersible decided it did not need to be certified - and it is the very first submersible in 60 years to be lost
Seems somehow those two points are related......

The owner is on record saying that he didn't get it certified because certification "stifles innovation".

He also told CBS News David Pogue that the sub, Titan, was made in collaboration with Boeing, NASA and the University of Washington.

NASA only consulted remotely and Boeing and the university denied any cooperation with him.

I would agree that certification does complicate and slow things down, but sometimes, there is a good reason things are done the way they are..... I think this is probably one of those times.

It is a sad, sad, story......

If you're assuming all the risk an want to bypass certification that's fine UNTIL you start taking paying customers (tourists) to depths where if anything goes wrong there are zero chances of survival.
Well shit, It's probably just me, but I don't see any humor in any of these last few posts.
I'm thinking it might be more irony. The owner died in his own contraption that he chose to cut corners on an avoid outside certification. He also said he avoided older, experienced personnel for "young innovative" thinkers. His statement came across as a slam on old white guys an a nod to diversity hiring. One person with experience in the field says he may have used the diversity as an excuse to not have anyone that knows more than him on the project objecting to his time saving measures.

and now the vomit.
the ocean gate thing. i wasnt present so im not passing judgement, but as an outsider thoughts. a salty mcpo told us - our ships and crews should fear and respect the sea. fear makes you careful, respect makes you a strong crew. ships are safe in port but thats not why they build them... shit happens, but do your job right and most of the shit will be good.- thats not word for word, its been some years lol. but it stuck with me. my take on the ocean gate titan, ships that are not built with respect and fear of the sea are not even safe in port.
for those that want a closer look i found this very interesting / revealing. not my video not promoting. this kids trip was cut short and i bet he is saying thank you Jesus for it now.

Probably NSFW.

No nudity or profanity, just probably NSFW.
