Driving to work today the road was littered with small rocks. Most likely from a quarry truck spilling it all over since they are like half the vehicles on the road in my area.

Anyway, a rock got kicked up and I felt it hit my rear passenger door and sure enough (2) chips about half the size of my pinky nail.

Sucks for sure but kinda relieved SinJin got its first paint chip. Only 5800 miles in. I’d love to keep SinJin pristine but admit I’d rather have a bunch of paint chips and it runs like a champ for 150,000 plus miles than the opposite.

Anyway my question is can I just leave the chip be? I have touch up paint but previous cars I had when I did touch up paint it actually looked worse than the chip itself. ?

Factory paint chip pen should match close. Matched my cyber orange perfectly!

At least cover any bare metal.

how can I tell it’s down to the bare metal? My truck is blue and where the chip is it’s white(ish).

Doors used to be aluminum, which might appear white, but I still would order a paint pen from Ford using your VIN number.

Lots of good DIY vids on youtube, let me if I can find one that was real useful.

Good luck!

Thanks! I have the touch up pen already but I just don’t have a steady hand.
It should be fine for me to wait until the weekend at least?

I have the factory paint pen I just don’t have a steady hand. ? usually I use too much which definitely blobs up. Maybe I’ll just try one coat.

Dr. Colorchip does a pretty good job.

no need to rush, just clean like with alcohol when you are ready.

Tickle Zombie,

This video was the most helpful for me, used it on my ranger and mercedes:

Touch Up Rock Chips

At 5:54 there is a really good tip on making a pencil sander (using fine sand paper!)
At 8:80 he shows a method of using a razor blade to "scrape" the touch up paint down to the paint level without messing up the surrounding paint.

Then using polishing compounds up to plexiglass polish to blend it in.

In all a good tutorial on paint touchup.

Good luck

Another Dr. Colorchip user here. Used it on my GTI and bought some for my Ranger as soon as I got it, for when the inevitable happens.

If the chips are that large and you want your truck looking great; have a paint shop or specialist fix the chips...you will barely see them. Then invest in some larger and excellent mud flaps to prevent rock chip damage.
