Try driving in tow mode, as I believe that it will not skip gears. It's the first switch I hit after starting the truck.
To save on daycare, get one of these. Just be sure to leave food and water.
Putting a TV in it will keep the little ones busy.

I am thinking you could raise chickens in that and live off selling the eggs!

Just got back from a drive after reading this. Most probably the fan you are hearing. It quiets down after 3rd. And the fan queits down after a few minutes.
Now my transmission does shift a little funky until it warms up after a minute or 2, so I usually start it and let it run for a minute before backing out of the drive. It's gotten better since miles have been added on.
I kind of enjoy crawling slowly through the neighborhood with the fan loudly reving.
A good test is to jump in start it up and sit inside for a minute and listen to the fan until it quiets down then start your trip. See if you hear the same and it shifts the same.
What fan noise? I have an engine cover ...

The hood side weather stripping probably does reduce exterior noise a tiny bit. More than the engine cover (which does nothing for the cooling fan clutch). The mouse family under the cover dampens the engine noise.

Edit: forgot to mention the plugs for the hood holes to dampen sound ...

Hood hole plugs? I must have these now. More air flow for my filter. Less hood stealing air holes.
