I have 285/70r17 mudders with a 1.5" wheel spacers and lift plates on stock rims. Crash bars have to be replaced or trimmed.

About the most you can fit typically on stock wheels is a 265/70/17, maybe a 275/70/17 if you're running something like a KO2 which tends to run on the smaller side. My duratracs (265/70/17) are about as big as I feel I could run on stock wheels, any bigger and I'd need spacers and crash bars.

I'm about to fit 285/70R17 on a 17x8.5" rim at 35mm offset with the Fox 2.0 level kit. That seems to be the sweet spot of stock-ish while providing solid gains. I'm assuming I may need to remove if not adjust my crash bars.

@RangerPNW is 100% right here. See, Ford gave us a metric crap ton of wheel arch to play with, however they decided to take part of it away with the crash bars.

I'm not opposed to the crash bars, I'm opposed to Fords crash bars, and I would highly recommend installing a set of low intrusion bars to retain the capability

Otherwise, a 265/70r17 is all you're gonna get.

Also, with a 285 wide, you will need spacers or you will rub knuckles. There is very little space between the tire and knuckle on factory sport rims

Just mounted a set of 285/70/17 KO2's on bronco badlands (+55 offset) wheels. Clears the spindle fine, minor rub at full lock when the suspension is articulating. I have the Fox 2.0 kit. Going to try to adjust the crash bars first, if that doesn't work I'll go with an aftermarket set. Shame that it's such a pain in the ass to fit this size tire, as aesthetically this is what should've come from the factory.

I'm about to do the same thing. Did you wind up having to go with the aftermarket bars, and did that work? The ReadyLIFT aftermarket bars say 3" lift in the description.

You'll probably have to add the aftermarket bars or remove them entirely. Driving around should clear fine, but articulation is the issue. This can vary wildly from tire to tire. Not all 285/70r17s are the same size.
