I know exactly what you mean. I have the same sound. My ex-wife has a 2019 Ranger and I have a 2021. Both have the noise, but mine is louder than hers. You really have to listen for hers.

I'm pretty sure it's just increased injector and hpfp activity. When I'm running a tune, the noise is more prominent, which is why I think that. I did have a moment of panic the first time I heard it, thinking it might be knock. But, it isn't. I see no change in knock readings when the sound is present and when it is not.

I wouldn't worry much about it. Push through it and then engine and exhaust will be loud enough to cover it.
I didn't think of that. Will have to listen more carefully next time. You have a unique perspective having an n of 2!

Thanks. Just annoying to have a truck this nice that perfotms so well and have it sound like a worn out VW Jetta TDI.

Can you post a video of what you're experiencing? There's no denying these things shake a little, but diesel rattle seems a bit extreme.
I've tried to record the sound but it doesn't come through on the recording.

What mileage is it getting? What octane gas are you running? Have you tried getting an oil sample report to see if any internal damage? Has it thrown any codes? Yours might not have the engine cover making it louder? You mentioned it runs great and is smooth. Maybe there is no issue and that's just how it sounds

It's getting 23-24 on the highway which is where it spends 95% of it's life. I'm running 91-93 octane. No oil test. No codes. I purchased the factory engine cover and installed it since the cover was deleted after 2020. It does run good and it may be just the way that it is. However, I can't imagine that a new engine is supposed to sound like this.

Good mileage, good gas, no codes - run it is my .02, but I am not a dealer

Maybe Blackstone report for piece of mind

The rattle/tick and fan noise are definitely not like other vehicles I have owned but I see it as normal now as long as it is consistent. Even my squeaky wastegate since it was new

I noticed mine doing the same under the same conditions a bit ago. Not sure when it started because my radio drowns the noise out. I am thinking it's in the fuel system... Very much an old diesel like noise and only under like 1/3 throttle right around 3k rpms.

Yep. That's it. It seems to be better in cooler weather and definitely less on 87 octane gas which is strange.

Mine started after it was getting 93 all the time and cold weather (relatively) showed up.

But other than that weird uno reverse card sounds like the same thing.

Other than some (depending on your fuel maker / supplier) increased detergent benefits, and that is a "maybe", why do some think running an octane above that which is spec'd is a benefit? The engine was designed around a certain octane (which as we all know of course, octane has nothing to do with "power"). Octane retards combustion, and is required by some high performance engines, which of course our Rangers do not have.

Mine is tuned to 91-93. So I run 93, because I can't get 91 at sea level.

"Tuned"?

And you say "Mine started after it was getting 93 all the time and cold weather (relatively) showed up."?

Perhaps "tuning" an "off the shelf" non performance engine outside of its design is causing a form of pre-detonation (ping)?

I think someone needs some coffee or a valium. Maybe both.

And that would be you.

"Tuning" a "Ford Ranger" is just a joke. I'm sorry if you don't know or realize that. But sure, keep running "high octane" and keep scratching your head why "Mine started after it (ticking / clicking sounds) was getting 93 all the time..."

Do a little research, you might just learn something?
