I've done the CarMax Offer thing.
If I could have gotten my Ranger 6 months ago CarMax had offered me $12,000 for my CRV. Now they are only offering me $8000. I noticed dealerships are still asking $14,000 - 16,000 for my year and similar milage and condition.
Anyway, I know I could sell to a private party and get more, or just trade it in when I pick up my Ranger and get a lot less.
So I was wondering if anyone has used one of those "Cash Offers" things from KBB, CarGurus or similar?
How'd it go, and do you think you got more than what you would have gotten if you had just traded your car in when you picked up your Ranger?

I tried it with my high mileage 2006 Pathfinder and they offered me $100 and I traded it in for $1500. Obviously they didn't want to bother picking it up. It barely made it to the dealer too, lol.

I used CarGurus. Probably cod have done better private party, maybe better with trade in. But I didn't have to deal with people coming to my house pointing out every flaw (see thread about weld spatter on muffler) just to get something off.

In the end what I found is CarGurus is just a middleman that resells to dealers. They picked my car up and the next day it was on the lot of my neighborhood Chevy dealer.

That's what I'm thinking.
20 Tire kickers for maybe 3 serious buyers.

I brought the cash offer with me to negotiate my trade-in. Just keep in mind the trade-in may reduce your tax bill as well by paying a lower total for the vehicle.
I did the same with my wife's Explorer a couple of years ago. I printed off the offer and showed it to the dealer. They didn't quite match the price but were pretty close. In Texas (and probably most states) a trade-in reduces the sales tax on the new vehicle. So with that considered, it was even closer.

I'm in Oregon. We don't have sales tax.

Yeah, but you do have Portland. ;)
I did what some of the others did and took my offer to the dealer to help me haggle a little.
I think it helped some. Whether it actually DID or not is debateable, I'm sure.

True. I think I'll go for a walk downtown and say: 'well, at least I don't pay sales tax'. :(
Being proud that you don't pay sales tax is like Europeans paying 50% income tax and bragging about 'free health care" and 'free education'. You may not pay sales tax, but like Texas that doesn't have state income tax, they get their money other ways.

I don't think I said I was proud I don't pay sales tax. And yes, Oregon is considered one of the most expensive states to live.
And I used to live in California.
What I like about sales tax is those who spend money with little concern on cost pay more in taxes. You buy a lot of expensive stuff, you pay more taxes. If you are thrifty you pay less taxes. I think sales tax is a superior method.
It rewards those who try to save money and limit purchases.

I didn't mean to offend you. And like Texas, I hope your taxes are used correctly. Texas has no income tax, but high fees and property taxes. And it shows with the quality of the infrastructure.
Here in Louisiana, there is state income tax, (low) property tax and sales taxes. But we have the worst school system and roadways.

Just sold my 2010 Subaru Outback (seen in my avatar) with 145,000 miles for $8000 to the first very desperate couple to answer my ad. I listed for $8800, and from the flood of responses I probably could've got a few more dollars but I was more than happy with $8k and only deal with one tire kicker.

Just two years ago, most I could've anticipated for a private sale was maybe $5k, with trade in at $4k.

The sense I get is that the pool of buyers are desperate these days, you'll likely have the first person commit to a sale.

I feel like I won the lottery. Got $3k in Ford incentives on a straight MSRP factory order back in March. Then, got double what I would've got for my Subaru if I'd sold a couple years ago. More than makes up for the stubborn 'straight MSRP' sales environment.

Now, I'm taking it right in the shorts for an optioned Snugtop Rebel (windoors, FOB locking rear glass door). $4k out the door price, which includes install and our 10% sales tax. For a frickin canopy.

Also taking a beating on my upgrade to Firestone Destination XT 255/75/17s in a C load, five of them (spare tire, too). Damn tires are $288 a piece. KO2s are over $300!

Sorry I just noticed your post. You didn't offend me.
