Tire suggestions/opinions

Wheelspeed is important, if for nothing else than to clean the tread out. Thick mud will fill in tread voids and essentially turn them into slicks without enough spin on things to fling the mud off the tire.

Which is exactly what happened but unfortunately I couldn’t go quickly at all because I have a gate that’s leaves me with only and few inches on either side and it’s uphill to get in my yard. In hindsight I never should have attempted it but I guess I got over ambitious. I got myself out though!

Personally, I don't understand all the hate. I've been running the ATM off road across the country for about 2 years now. The tread seems to do a good job as an AT and this same tire in a 33" would be excellent. At 53k miles, the tread wear has become a bit uneven and I'm starting to get some road noise and vibrations. I'd chalk that up to my lax approach to tire rotations and alignment checks. It's a good tire. USAA is offering 25% of Goodyear tires so I'll probably go with them when its time for a new set, but the Dynapro AT2 Xtreme is a strong candidate after my experience with the factory ATMs.

There's the issue of side wall strength and cut/chip resistance, but that's a similar problem to mud traction. Gotta get a rock crawling tire if you want to go rock crawling!

I won’t be rock crawling lol. I was definitely in a very specific situation that ideally would require a mud tire but that’s basically the only situation I’ve experienced with the ranger. I got it at the end of march in ‘21 and the 21/22 winter where I am wasn’t anything near winters we normally have here. So I haven’t yet got to see how it does in a decent snow.

FX4 owners, what’s your opinion and experience with the tires that come from the factory? When I got it it was the end of winter and last winter wasn’t anything special at all so I haven’t had the pleasure of driving in deep (or even more than a few inches) of snow. In the spring I tried to drive into my backyard after some serious rain abd the weight/mud combo shut me down. I feel like a more aggressive tire was necessary. I could feel the terrain management/ diff lock and 4LOW trying it’s best but the treads were quickly caked in thick claylike mud. Thoughts? Tire suggestions?

After 408 miles and one week of ownership, my tires are still round.

You can't go wrong with a bfg a/t or a general grabber for a more aggressive tread pattern.

Nah not much snow to speak of at home, but for what it's worth I've played in the snow a few times on my road trips. Had a few Fall and Winter trips to see friends in Greeley and into Wyoming. Snow traction wasn't amazing, but it worked.

You can't go wrong with a bfg a/t or a general grabber for a more aggressive tread pattern.

Unfortunately not this time. It was only about 20ft if that of serious mud which led to parking in my neighbors corner house driveway and wheelbarrowing 2tons of dirt into my garden(I made 4 trips I didn’t haul all that dirt at once)

But my question was aimed more at your "I don't get the hate" response.

Snow performance on the Hankooks is severely lacking. They perform like a midgrade all season in the snow. Which is not at all my experience with other AT tires.

A good AT tire should be just slightly less grippy than a snow tire in the slick stuff.

Was just explaining why so many of us dislike them.

As a road tire, in the dry, I have no issues with them. Snow is not a huge part of my driving experience here on the front range of Colorado, but it is common enough that I feel better with a tire that can handle anything from a dusting, to an ice storm, to a dumping. I don't have the luxury of working from home with my jammies, fire, and latte. I've got to be at work regardless of the weather.

Add in a little bit off offroading and the sidewalls can become an issue here in the ROCKY mountains.

Again, as a street tire for dry conditions, they're fine. My factory kooks did me just fine through my first half a winter and summer. Offroad traction was fairly decent in the limited experience I had with them. But they had to go before my first real winter with the truck.

I see the kooks as being acceptable for many drivers. I just think Ford should've gone with another factory option on the FX-4s.

But then again, I don't think I've stuck with the OEM factory tire on any of the new rvehicles I've bought in roughly 20 years. So saying I'm a little picky about tires might be an understatement.

+1 agree. I think the Hankooks work for the non-FX4 4WD but Ford should have put the Grabbers (like the Tremor) or some other improved option on the FX4. That said, mine do ok on mild off-roading, but I my dirt roads are not terribly rocky.

Everybody has their favorites and lists of wants and needs but be sure to check out the Toyo Open Country AT3s when the time comes.

Been real happy with mine for about 20k miles now. My only complaint is they're heavy. But that's my fault, my preferred size only comes in E-rated regardless of manufacturer.
