Hard to see in this picture but the connector going into the solenoid is heat discolored and the plastic deformed. Had to use a bright led flashlight and zoom in on phone so washed it out. I can still smell the burnt electrical in my nose after being near it sitting here in my house. I am going to let dealer resolve properly.

to me it almost sounds like your starter solenoid stuck and the starter stayed activated for some time, eventually burning the commutator and brushes....maybe.
Yes probably. What's strange it happened as I was driving down the road.

So heading home from getting more landscape materials all of a sudden my truck died completely. No electrical at all. There was a loud clicking(electrical) under the hood. When I opened the hood there was a electrical smell and smoke. Sadly I didn't have any tools to pull the battery cable as the battery was discharging. I flagged down a motorcyclist who had tools and helped me out

Waiting to be towed to the dealer, right next to my house.

Hi Richard
Sorry to hear about your Ranger, just bring some San Miguel and Marlboro to the dealer and they will fix it right away.

Truer than you think.

This is an important point, when jumping the Ranger you MUST clamp the hot jump lead to the positive BATTERY POST, not any of the various fused cables connecting to the breakout box. Thanks for the reminder.
Not sure why one would Not do that but ok thank you.

Because some of us are not as smart/informed as some of you about all this newfangled technology stuff.
I'm thankful for many of the simple tips and reminders found in these threads.

Lol! Well nothing new-gangled about placing the leads directly onto a fully exposed battery under the hood.

True enough for the geezers among us.
But there are those that walk among us daily that don't spend much time under the hood of a vehicle and that may never have had to jump one off before. To them, maybe they only know red means positive and black negative...and they grab onto the closest red looking thing they see without having to get their hands dirty moving that big red cover off the battery terminal.
I've found that I can't assume people know the things I know just because they're of the same generation as me or that in other things they're smarter than I am and "should" know something.

Fully exposed.... Really? I can so see a non-automotive person clipping the clamp to the wrong spot.
