Any ideas on whether or not the new rangers need rustproofing? Seems like the cab is steel, I know the tailgate is some kind of aluminum alloy, dealer plate magnet wouldn't hold. Just asking.

Good topic as I've been wondering about rust proofing myself.

I go to pick up my truck today at 9:30 !!! it has been a long wait from feb 11

The body and frame come treated from the factory to prevent rust. In my opinion, I think it's best to let the factory rust proofing to do its job for the first few years. Make sure to give the body frequent washes and consistently spray down the frame. In 5+ years, you might start noticing questionable areas on the frame. This is when I would start sanding down rust spots and painting over with Rustomelum Rustreformer.

When I lived in Indiana, we always used Ziebart.

I made a hose and used plain old rustoleum on my Silverado. I sprayed it into every crack and crevice. I'm going to do it again this summer. Pa, winter salt is a killer for vehicles.

I ordered some Fluidfilm to try out on the wife’s car, but heard it leaves a layer that attracts road grime. Not sure I want that underneath my new truck. We don’t get too much snow in our area, but they do prep the roads. Would Krylon enamel clear coat hold up throughout the winter? Does anyone have recommendations for a non-greasy undercoating?

TIA

The nice thing about the fluid film is you just apply a degreaser and pressure wash it all off. It does mean you need to reapply the fluid film after doing this though.

Cool. I read some reviews saying they had to use a heated pressure washer and scrub it off w/ a brush.

I’ve always just used either the car wash wand, or my gas pressure washer. For my own pressure washer, I’ve build a 90 degree end, to make cleaning the underside easy. I typically use a quality degreaser followed by a good strong car wash soap several times a year, then reapply the fluid film as needed. Still easier to deal with than under coater

Hey everyone, I just had my 19' Ranger undercoated with NH Oil Undercoating here in Nh. Since this truck is new and expensive, plus I plan on keeping it for a long time, I decided it is well worth the money to have it done.

I went off roading multiple times with the truck this summer so my undercarriage is pretty scratched up in places. I also live in Michigan so I'm going to have to prepare for the salt.

My plant is to drive the truck up on ramps, degrease the whole undercarriage, and powerwash. Once dry, I'm going to sand down any exposed metal from the scratches to get rid of surface rust, then spray with Rustoleum Rust-Reformer. It's essentially black spray paint that reacts with rust and neutralizes the reaction to prevent spreading. I'm not sure how deep it penetrates into the rust, but I don't have any deep rust so I'm not too worried.

I've considered the fluid film stuff, but that stuff can peel and trap moisture over time. I'm kind of turned off by greasy undercoatings too since it makes everything...greasy. So paint it is!

I would suggest a proper high-build underbody sealer such as Wurth if you're looking at doing your own underbody care. It's very inexpensive for how much product you get. Have used this on many of my cars for years with great results (including Mazda's which are notorious for rusted wheel wells. Just prep the area and mask off what you don't want covered, then a quick shot and you'll be good to go for years.

Wurth is an OEM supplier for many chemical products for germanic manufacturers.

If you're going to that amount of prep work, then you should use a proper professional grade rust preventor like Por 15 that's been around for decades and improved upon generationally.
