There are two things I have a hard time wrapping my head around. First, why doesn't GM kill the Buick? Both Chevy and GMC lines duplicate everything Buick has in both trim levels and price.

The other one is, why doesn't Ford kill the Lincoln? In recent years, everything they try (Blackwood among others) hasn't worked. Even worse, if you check all of the boxes, you can spend more on fancying up an F150 or Explorer, well past the price of any of Lincoln's offerings. If not, then, why not turn it into a real performance line, similar to a Caddy CTS-V? Imagine an Escape-sized SUV with a 5.2 flat-plane and DCT!

I'm not a gm fan by any means, but why did they kill Saturn? Yes they were ugly, but seemed to be reliable cars.

I'm still mad about ford killing mercury, they were nicer in my opinion, and cheaper when you bought them used. I've had a couple mountaineers, couple sables, and always liked the gran marquis.

If FoMoCo decided to try to market another truck under the Lincoln brand, with the Ranger as a base, what would it be like?
3.0 motor from the Ford explorer ST line and everything else from that trim level. That thing goes. Add in Forged green as an option. No chrome. I'm in.

Even though the products overlap, they fill market niches that if those lines weren't offered would drive customers who are seeking a certain perceived status associated with the brands to other makers. Lincoln sales are relatively steady and since the majority of product engineering and development is already done on the Ford version of the product, the additional cost to make the changes and market them is probably still profitable. Why wouldn't Ford want to sell a $90,000 or $100,000 Lincoln badged Explorer as an Aviator, as opposed to losing that sale because people aren't willing to spend that much on an Explorer solely based on perceived status. All makers do the same. Honda/Acura, Nissan/Infinity, Toyota/Lexus, etc.

I will say at the Chicago Auto Show this year, both the GMC and Buick areas were tiny and had so little interest that in one of the Buicks, a man was just sleeping in it. Nobody bothered him. The Lincoln area was jammed with people.

Buick has become gm's* import brand. only the Enclave is made in the USA at Lansing, Mi.

*gm no longer uses capitol letters, so we should follow suit.

problem is, Lincolns, and other fine luxury automobiles attract a demographic that likes excess of everything.
You are not putting a lot of excess into the insides of a Ranger. The size constraints simply wont allow it.

sure we can dress up some exterior things, put a few fancy things on the inside, but you'll never pack enough punch into it to attract the crowd that demands the luxury of a Lincoln. Heck, Ford didn't even go with a King Ranch version for obvious reasons.

My Opinion on the Lincoln F150...ugly as f*ck.
I see them running around on occasion, and I cant help but throw up a little every single time.
I'm sure a Lincoln Ranger would be just as stomach churning

Lincoln can stick with the saturated market of SUV's and die off in a year or two for all I care.
I think the new Expedition looks better than Navigator.

A Lincoln Ranger would certainly have huge tail lights like other Lincoln trucks and SUVs.
Lincoln - Fords ugly cousin.

Interesting topic. I agree with the others here that point out that since the Ranger sits below the F150 in price (and luxury), I am not sure it would make sense for Ford to make a Lincoln version of the Ranger. I, for one, liked the looks of the Blackwood, but I think that the high end F150s offer everything that a Lincoln would anyway.

As for why Buick still exists instead of Saturn, or my beloved Oldsmobile, if I recall correctly, Buick was huge in China when GM decided to kill the other divisions. My wife and I owned several Saturns over the years, from the 100%-Saturn first generation SL2 to the full-GM Vue. The original SL2 was brilliant. With each subsequent generation, they made Saturns more GM-corporate, and they started to suck more and more. The L300 we had was garbage.

I would also argue that Oldsmobile was really leading the way for GM in innovation when GM killed the brand. The Quad 4 was quite an engine for its time, and the Aurora V8, while sharing DNA with the Cadillac Northstar V8, was also excellent. Both the Aurora and Alero were great, stylish cars for the day. In the end, Oldsmobile was too closely slotted between the "everyday luxury" of Buick and the "performance luxury" of Cadillac that the brand did not make sense anymore.

I would have loved to get my hands on a Marauder.

I think many would disagree.....
