I'm getting excessive (severe) wear on the inside edge of *both* rear tires. I realize the rear alignment doesn't have adjustment, but it seems odd that both tires are wearing in the same way. I don't have the locking rear end, but it seems like maybe something could be wrong inside the diff and causing a locking-type situation. I haven't had the chance to put it on the lift and turn the wheels yet.

I did have the bad rear axle seal issue (repaired) and maybe the leaking of gear lube caused some damage? I don't notice excessive noise from the diff and the truck seems to be fine otherwise.

Thoughts?

Pics?

How many miles on the shocks?

Check them for leaking, wetness, or seaping.

EDIT: stock suspension (Aka no lift?)? Wheel spacers?

Hi Ethan,

Pick a spot like the B pillar and measure to the center of the rear wheel on both sides. That is quick and dirty to see if the axle is installed square to the body. Sounds like an alignment check would be necessary at the dealer to get an exact measurement. It is hard to tell if the axle is seated on the spring correctly... I recall one post where one side was not installed correctly.

best,
Phil

i'd look at an alignment first. that will tell you alot more than we ever could.

perhaps they didnt get the axle installed properly (straight) after your seal issue?

without tire pics, cant offer much more ideas.

how are the rear shocks?
Unfortunately, I didn't take pictures of the worn tires. Just imagine those worn tires they have on display at the tire shop when they are trying to sell you an alignment. I'm pretty sure they were going to mount my tires on the wall.

I did the rear axle replacement myself. Never had to remove the axle housing or lower/loosen the suspension to fix it.

I think the shocks are fine, only 32k miles. (Although, I had not thought of those as an issue so I haven't really inspected them.)

I walked past this Taco the other day and thought, these tires aren't going to last long.

So, I took it to an alignment shop. Rears are out of alignment. Seems like axle housing might be bent, although it sure looks straight.
May have to proceed with rear axle replacement.

I don't think so. The axle seal had been leaking prior and when I replaced it, the job went quick. New axle went right in and stopped the leak.
I looked it on the lift at the alignment shop and they noticed that the springs and the u-bolts on each side didn't seem to line up. It is hard to see, but when you look at them directly in line, it is visible.
