Saw this posted elsewhere I figured some people here might be in the market for a cheap dashcam to get started with.

A while back I bought an Aukey dashcam, but seems like Amazon banned the company. This company seems to be a Russian one instead of Chinese. That might be a good thing since Russians are well known for putting dashcams in their vehicles, lol.

I have been using one of my Dashcams for 8 years and the other three for about 3 years. All are Garmin and Thinkware. I never worry about any of these Dashcams failing since their history says they will last. IMO, it is not a good idea to skimp on quality when it comes to a Dashcam

Perhaps but I think in the US most people don't consider dashcams a necessity, they are merely a luxury. For society as a whole which do you think has a greater impact? A few cars with expensive dashcams, or a whole lot more cars with cheap dashcams? With cheap dashcams some might fail but there will still be a bunch more in circulation.

If a dashcam is important to you then by all means get an expensive one, but for alot of folks they really aren't. The low price however makes it an interesting toy that some are willing to play with.

And they aren't known to try to hack into our tech like the chinese are.

Just kidding, sort of. You're right, the russians love dashcams, probably because they have a crap load of insurance scams.... do they even HAVE insurance in russia?

I agree, but I also didn't spend a buttload on mine. I have a regular HD pointed forward and a little lower quality one pointed back, but it's not a complete cheapo. I think for the pair I spent about $175 but that was about 3 years ago.

100% this! I was going to buy a cheap dash cam back in the spring but after looking into them the clarity is not there. What good is having one if you cant even read the license plate or see the persons face clearly? I look at this as another added layer of insurance and as the old saying goes "You get what you pay for" stands true.

I ended up going with the Thinkware U100 4K dual camera and couldn't be happier with it. Sure it was much more than I originally wanted to spend but the clarity and peace of mind is worth it.

To understand this point, I looked up the resolution conversion. 1080p (the Amazon one in the OP) is the same as a 2.1 megapixel cell phone camera circa 2006-2010. That's pretty low res & indicates a pretty cut rate piece of equipment all around.

That said, if someone just wanted to try out the idea of having a dashcam, the OP one is inexpensive enough it can be repurposed when someone decides they want a higher res or more feature packed dashcam. And although it's not likely to record license plates, it will still show fault most of the time if an accident goes to court (ie both parties are known).

Personal opinion: For the camera in question, it is no bargain!

The price of 4K capable dash cams, with GPS and rear cam to boot, are now hovering around $120. Terabyte memory capability is a bit more expensive, but 500 GB is becoming common place.

In the near future (6 to 8 months), 8K versions will be available. And when they are, I'll buy one. After all, the most important attribute, is being able to read the license plate of an offending vehicle.

I shouldn't have to remind dash cam users, that keeping the lens and windshield in front of them clean, is a very important attribute!

By the way, the NHTSA's upcoming strategy meeting agenda, covers mandating front and rear dash cams as standard OEM items. Tesla already has them, as well as some high-end GM and Ford models. It is the wave of the future!

Sidelight: Very few vehicle owners are aware that in-cabin voice recording has been with us for some time. This in addition to all of the vehicle parameters being recorded by the various on-board diagnostic computers. I suspect it won't be long until we have driver cams mandated, so the powers-that-be, will be able to see nut-headed drivers brake-checking a semi! Oh! And did I mention that live transmission of vehicle parameters (driver's inputs among them), are already slated to be enacted?

George Orwell was ahead of his time!

For a 1080P camera $30 is not a bad price.

I've used Rexing dash cams for years and they have been great currently have the V1 4K model. It's small and takes great video and for only $100 a decent deal. The only draw back is there is no rear facing camera with it.

I always wondered what was the most popular dash cam in Russia and other former Soviet countries, seems to be pretty good quality when I watch the crashes on YouTube.

Very good points to consider. You do get want you pay for in 99% of the situations. You can pay now or pay later.

Thanks,

Here is some test footage for this dash cam, seems decent enough.

BTW this Russian dash cam, was made in China, go figure.

Too funny, I threw down and bought one right after you posted this initially. for $32 bucks delivered I thought it would be a fun waste of time. I saw the same thing on the box "made in China".
its not too bad for the price, obviously the resolution is no where close to the $400 units, and I would hope not. But it is smaller than I expected. does kinda sucks there is no phone app. but it does give me a chance to test the waters to see if I want to go all in with a serious system.
thanks for posting the link by the way, I noticed not long after I ordered it the price was back up to $47. at full price I would definitely think of maybe doubling my money for a better unit.

Surprisingly it looks better than I expected. I guess for $30.00 you cant go wrong as long as it works for 6-12 months (or more) it's a good price for some added insurance.

Yeah the $29 price was like a daily deal or something. As of today though it is still showing a coupon, if you click that when you add it to the cart it comes out to about $36.
