"While obtaining the baseline horsepower and torque numbers (light green lines), the truck was equipped with a cat-back exhaust, but with the factory ECU calibration still in the mix very little added power would’ve been on tap due to the exhaust system. However, once tuned the higher-flowing exhaust system likely complemented the tweaked ECU calibration. Full disclosure, the dyno read 10-percent friendly the day these results were recorded (most ’19-’20 Rangers dyno 245 to 255rwhp, stock), but even with higher baseline figures than what some dynamometers show, the power gains and overall before and after results are still relative. Once Gearhead’s ECU calibration was uploaded and dyno’d, a 35hp gain was observed, along with an additional peak torque number of 45 lb-ft. Another important bit of information is that all dyno runs were made on 93 octane. EcoBoost Rangers can make as much as 15-to-20 percent less horsepower on 87 octane."

I believe that Ford's tune is 45hp above stock power with 93 octane, not 87. I am unsure if Ford rates the Ranger at 93 octane or 87. I'll see if I can find out.

IIRC you have to run the Ford tune with 93 so I would assume the numbers are based on 93 octane.

Yes, I would assume Ford is giving increases above what you would normally get with 93 octane on a stock Ranger.

Not at all. You are adding safety against knock, LSPI, and adding power and torque. Win, win. I would wager you get better mileage on premium as well.

Ford uses OAR (octane adjust ratio) to control timing, etc. on the Ecoboost, so having better octane fuel that is more resistant to knock will let the engine make more horsepower and torque. Thus it is possible for it to make more than the 87 rated power with premium fuel because of this ability to adjust for octane. Most new engines do this, it is just that some manufacturers do not advertise it. Mazda has always been pretty good about this on a lot of their engines. Even when they were running the 3.7 Ford V6 in the first generation CX-9 they gave an 87 rating and a 93 rating. I haven't seen any for their N/A Skyactiv engines, but they do for the turbo 2.3 Skyactiv.

I've been running premium since I got my tune last August. I had lost about 2 mpg when I did the level and larger tires but after tuning and using premium I gained that back. The truck runs so much better using premium fuel.

My dad has a 2004 Ranger 4.0 4x4 that I sold him years ago. Looks like a new one and runs strong at 170K miles. It has some BAMA tunes and consistently can get 4mpg better with the 93 tune than the 87 tune plus noticeably more power.

I wish I could get 93 out here, the highest they have is 91. I never knew you couldn't get 93 out west because it was everywhere when I lived on the east coast.

That sucks. There are quite a few good 91 octane tunes out there and you probably wouldn't give up much over 93. Unleashed has one.

That's why I went with Livernois. You have a variety of tunes to chose from and you're not locked into using strictly 91 or 93. Plus when gas gets to crazy expensive (coming soon!) I can flash back to the 87-89 performance tune and save a little money at the pump and still get some performance out if it.

Yea, I have 87, 89, 91, 93 Performance and 93 Tow. Plus E50 Performance.

It is possible you are told to run 91/93/94 or whatever so as that if you aren’t seeing the specs you were sold for said tune they could say it’s your fault. Also tunes can change a lot of things like fuel to air ratio and timing where premium fuels will be better suited for a more efficient and consistent ignition level. Strictly changing fuel won’t give you 45hp unless the engine knows what to do with it. If you can’t get the required air into the engine to efficiently ignite the better burning fuel you are just blowing money out the tailpipe without burning or it’s blowing by and going into the oil. I am not familiar with tunes and don’t have one or plan to get one.

You obviously don’t understand engine timing if you think octane means nothing.

Wait will I gain horsepower and torque just by running a higher octane gas? Or is a time required? What gas should I be putting in this thing?
