Initially, I thought the alpine ktp 445u I had piggybacked onto the stock head unit sounded pretty good, like 7-8/10. If you're not familiar with forscan, and want an add on amp without running much wiring, stop here and get that. Oh, you will get small speaker pops when you use your fordpass modem. It never happens while I'm in the truck though.

The alpine doesn't have load resistors so the Ford head unit thinks that your speakers are disconnected. This cuts off the engine sound enhancement, but also reroutes your warning chimes to the instrument cluster speaker. No biggie and they actually do a better job of getting your attention here.

Now onto the kicker key:
The kicker key has a microphone that it uses to analyze some sample pink noise to enable the DSP to undo the factory tuning; then it adds its own flavor to your audio after the fact. Unfortunately, the factory tuning is actually not that bad and the kicker dsp trying to override it didn't sound good at all to me compared to the alpine. The resulting sound was very colored and unnatural from the sound getting processed by the HU, then unprocessed and reprocessed again by the Dsp. Since the kicker key has the option of adding a dummy load to your speaker leads, the HU thinks speakers are still connected to it, therefore adding the kicker key also re-enables the factory engine enhancement sounds, which really messed with my subwoofer. I don't get any speaker pops with the kicker, though the chimes coming through the amp are louder than before.

After going into forscan and disabling the engine sounds and disabling the factory dsp to get a flat sound curve, I reran the kicker auto analysis, then gave a little bump to mids on the Ford factory head unit and now it sounds great! Super clean sound with realistic highs, mids, and clean tight bass. Highly recommended if you've got the time to work with it. 9/10 with my Rockville under seat sub.

Another note about the factory tuning, it rolls off frequencies below 50khz to protect the cheap factory speakers. Disabling this tuning really helped my subwoofer hit notes that previously weren't sent to it. This will likely kill the stock speakers in short order.

For speakers, I replaced the fronts with rockford fosgate punch 1675-s components, rated at 60w rms. I think they're fantastic! They also really highlight how crappy the rears are so I have rears rockford fosgate prime 6.75 coaxial on the way.

Is it worth 250$ to upgrade from the alpine amp to the kicker? Absolutely not! I was regretting my decision badly until I messed around with settings in forscan. Am I happy now? Definitely. I think it sounds as good as the aftermarket HUs I had in the past, except I can't fine tune the sound as much.

Was the sound deadening worth it? ? Yes. I used only 2ft Sq of kilmat in my front doors and about 5ft on the back of the cab and I definitely notice a difference in exterior noise and the quality of my sound system.

This sounds like it'll help but I got lost quick. Seems like it could use an amp but I know not how to do that. And I'm not computer savy enough to use Forscan. What's an easy elementary school level of getting more highs/power? Will new speakers accomplish that? That's something in my range of expertise I could handle.
Rear speakers seem non- existent. They're just horrible.

New speakers might help, but I think the real problem is the lack of wattage going to the speakers to begin with. I'd recommend the Alpine KTP-445u for you since it's mostly plug and play once you set up the harness.

Here's a good primer on how these power packs work

https://www.amazon.com/CUTTING-HARNESS-installation-aftermarket-amplifier/dp/B00D9W3CHY
This harness will allow you to hook up your small amp without running new power wires or cutting existing wires. It piggybacks to your OEM harness and splices in between your OEM head unit and the speakers.

Here's how it all comes apart.

Here's the sub I used: https://www.rockvilleaudio.com/ss8p/
I tapped into the rear speakers at the for-11ck harness before the alpine power pack to provide an output to this sub/amp combo. It fits perfectly under the passenger seat.

This would be a good place to start--I ran stock speakers with the alpine power pack for about a year and I was very happy with the results. No forscan needed, as the engine sounds will be disabled as a side effect of adding the alpine amp

So the speaker pops are coming from the ford pass modem?? I have the Alpine installed in mine currently and I get random speaker pops when the truck is completely off. Like when you open a door or even when all the doors are shut and truck is off you will hear it pop once or twice shortly after powering the truck down. Ive tried all the forscan remedies and even ran a dedicated remote turn on wire and I still get the speaker pop. I actually bought a kicker key to replace the alpine (not installed yet) just in the hopes it would eliminate my speaker pops. They drive me insane. You can't wash, or work on the truck without disconnecting the amp unless you want to hear random pops every 5 minutes.

So the factory system has a 50 Hz subsonic filter that can be disabled in forscan? Do you have any more information about that? Does the filter say what the rolloff is below it? 12 dB / octave? Are you sure it's at 50 Hz? We're talking about the non-B&O non-subwoofer system I assume.

For component speakers I'm eying up Focal IS Ford 165 components specifically made for this.

https://www.f150forum.com/f118/disable-bass-roll-off-flatten-eq-using-forscan-394266/index2/ Some information on the bass roll-off here. I think I got the 50hz figure from Focus Fanatics or some other Ford car forum, but the same behavior seems to be the same across all non-premium sync units. I lack the expertise to tell you exactly how much it drops off though

I don't recall where I read it, but it seems to be true based on my subjective experience after disabling Ford's signal processing in forscan. Especially evident in the performance of my subwoofer after the changes.

I bet those Focal speakers will sound great, but if you're limiting yourself to those due to the direct fitment, I was able to get a really good fit and seal using the foam ring and the metra speaker adapters. The metra adapters don't account for the 1/16" or so standoffs that the speakers thread into--so I used a heat glue gun to create a seal where the adapters meet the door. The foam takes up the rest of the gap to the door panel.

Sorry, just saw your post now! Yes the pops seem to come every time the fordpass modem comes on. I haven't heard a single pop since I put on the kicker key.

Since you've done all these operations in steps, what is your take on the stock speakers?
I already deadened the door, by mass loading. It made a difference in how quite is the car but it did not improve the sound imho, which I actually expected to happen. Maybe it did but I am not satisfied.

Now, in theory I would go for adding an amp first, and lastly changing the speakers. I can do it all at once, but it's always nicer to approach a project in stages.

I have a similar setup as you, PowerBass components in the front doors, PowerBass coax in the rear doors, KickerKey amp, JBL BassPro Nano sub, and dynomat on all 4 doors. I turned off the enhanced engine noise a while ago, like you it was wreaking havoc with my sub, what I don't know how to do is disable the factory dsp. Would you point me to the forscan option to do that? Thanks for your help!

Does anyone else have hiss with their Kicker Key? Nobody here has mentioned it as far as I can find, but it seems to be a common complaint on F-150 and Tacoma forums when I googled it. I have my gain just under half way with Hertz speakers and I have a pretty loud hiss under low volume. The amp has a good ground and I used the for-11ck harness. Any thoughts?

I noticed that you were looking at the FOcal IS Ford 165 components? Have you got this done yet, I am getting mine and the kicker key installed by a local professional audio shop...thanks.

DO you know what speakers are in the 2020 ranger xlt? Initially when I bought my 2020 ranger xlt the sound was horrible(or hsould I just say typical of what stock speakers sound like) but I kind of messed around with the EQ and they actually sound good now). I was just curious if they are just regular stock ford speakers? Thanks

I'm going to get both those and the Powerbass OE65C-FD speakers and run a full set of tests on them (frequency response, distortion, etc) and then install the better set. No timeframe on when this will happen. No expectations either. More expensive doesn't necessarily mean better in my experience.

Pretty sure you get the regular OEM stock speakers unless you have the B&O package

Is the "727-01-01 xx50 Turns on line-outs" for using rca line level hookups? I installed the kicker key200.4 using a wiring harness, no rcas. Do i need to change this setting in forscan to anything?
