Small spot about the size of a dime, just below the rear window:

The bed liner was installed a week ago this past Monday, but I just noticed it today after getting the truck washed for the first time after some winter weather we've had. Obviously I'm going to ask them to fix it, but what exactly do you think that entails? Does that whole section below the rear window have to be repainted? I'd imagine this stuff doesn't come off too easily without damaging the paint.

Another option, if I can live with the spot, is to have them refund the cost of the bed liner or a portion of the bed liner. I just don't know if I can live with that spot.

I spray bedliners and this happens quite often. Just some adhesive cleaner and a plastic razor blade will take it right off. No worries. Keep in mind the bed is scuffed to get that good adhesion. Where that overspray is on clean paint.

Yep. I would just show them and assume they'd easily make it right. Not worth a big deal IMO unless they give you a hard time about making it right.

The spot would bother me more than the other issue but both are bad.

Small question why dealer and not factory done?

Ford factory spray-in liner doesn't cover the end of the bed where it meets the tailgate, from what I've read in other posts here. My dealer does liners through a Line-X shop down the street anyway, I ordered without the liner and will get it sprayed in some time after delivery.

My Ranger is getting Line-X Premium installed right now. I told the guy about the OP's issue and he said not to worry.

I'll take a pic of the spray at the tailgate.

Aaron,

I had an independent local company (not a Ford Dealer) to do a Spray in Bedliner. $425.00 total which included tax. The job was flawless except for two almost unnoticeable areas of overspray between the top of the bed and the Ford Icon on the left rear panel:

1. Two very small connected lines no larger than 1/16" total size and, 2. A dot about the size of a ball point pen dot. I didn't discover these under after the spray had cured and just assumed that these would be permanent and couldn't be removed so didn't take it back to the company who did it for a fix.

After reading your post yesterday, I decided to take some photos of the two areas of overspray and I was amazed to discover that the overspray described in item #1. per above was no longer on the paint and also there was no marking on the paint where it had previously existed. Is this possible? Could it have been removed when the Truck was last washed or? However item #2. (the dot) per above remained.

I have attached photos of the Bedliner (sorry about the shadow); The Ford Icon showing the area where the two places of overspray 1st appeared; and a closeup of the paint area where the dot still is but it is so small that it doesn't show in this photo.

Regards,

Goof off solvent works wonders on stuff like this and road tar too. The plastic scraper helps with the heavy stuff once you get it softened. Just be gentle using one so you don’t scratch/scuff the clear coat.

Rick,

Thank you very much for the tip on removing overspray. I'm glad to know that. I think at this point I will let it go because all that is left of the overspray is the micro dot and probably no one will ever notice it but myself.

I am still curious to know how and why the other spot of overspray disappeared between the time I first discovered it and then noticed it was gone yesterday?

My past experiences with paints and coatings is that when they are applied they stay unless you go through a specific removal process. Maybe that other portion of overspray came off because the paint where it resided was not sanded and prepared as the Bedliner was?

Could be a few different things. First is the clear coat. It’s smooth surface makes it difficult for paint like this to bond well. Over a short time it will flake off because of that. Another possibility with overspray is it wasn’t fully wet when it hit the surface you’re seeing. So partially dried paint lands on a surface has enough fluidity to stick but not bond. Leave it in the hot sun though and it will finish the bonding! That’s why it’s important to get it off as soon as you notice it!
