Squealing noise on acceleration

Hey guys,

Just wondering if anybody out there has had any issues with squealing sounds/possible belt sounds on acceleration.

I have a 2019 Ranger XL FX4.

I only began to notice the squealing over the last week after installing a new AWE exhaust and a Turbosmart BOV. Just installed the Roush CAI this evening and the squealing sound is even more prominent.

I’m not a mad man on the road. Pretty normal driver(very subjective) it only happens on acceleration under load(not when parked reving engine). My son said it’s the tires but I’m not convinced it is. Im running Nitto Ridge Grapplers 285/70/17. I’m not driving it ready hard but am enjoying the new sounds the truck is making minus the squealing. It’s not super loud either but it is noticeable.

HI Amos,

If I read this correctly, it appears the noise popped up after component installations? Maybe retrace your install steps and see if there is something that needs adjusting, tightening etc.

Tire noise is usually not a squeal...weird

Can we get a clip of the audio? Maybe your BOV is leaking since it was changed. A boost leak can make all kinds of different sounds. Squeal included..

Otherwise maybe you are hearing the turbo spool now since you said it’s louder after the intake install.

When I have squealing at acceleration it is usually accompanied by tire smoke....I know that doesn't help.

Phil and Andy are probably onto something here.

I’m sure it’s not the tires. At any speed, if I get on the it, it will make the sound. Very distinct, I hope I’m describing it properly. I hadn’t thought of it as a high pitched whistle.
I’m gonna go out there and see if I can record it while driving and see what y’all think. I’ll double check connections first.

So I just open the hood and double checked my connections on the blowoff valve. I thought it might’ve looked loose because of a tiny gap but I realize that was the space allowed for the gasket. I did remove it and took pictures of it looks like there may have been some type of leakage. I cleaned off both surfaces and reconnected and tightened everything down as best I could without stripping.

I took a video of the test drive.

If you would like to fast forward here are the times that I can hear the noise: 23 sec, 39 sec, 50 sec, 1:14 seconds, 1:42sec, 2min, 2:46 sec, 3:10 sec, 3:23 seconds, 3:33 sec.

Can’t hear it squeal ..

Which BOV did you get? I here the boost being bleed off by the BOV in what sounds like a VTA (vent to atmosphere) system. That would be your chirping/screeching sound.

You would know if your tires were spinning and they are definitely not. The mods you have done are in the charge and intake system which is where your new found noise is coming from. If you have a VTA Style valve then the noise is the nature of that type of valve.

A nice test would replicate your sounds without having to drive the truck. Find a safe place to do this... place the truck in drive hold your foot firmly on the brake and then apply throttle to about 2500-300rpm and then quickly release the gas peddle. If you hear the noise then it’s your BOV releasing boost. (Normal ).

I can definitely hear it - it definitely sounds to my ears like a BOV or wastegate sound based off where it happens in the rev range and throttle position.

Do you still have your stock BOV? May be worth a shot seeing if it still does with the stock one.

Like Doc....cannot hear the squeal. I think this was recorded after the BOV reinstall, correct? I recall another post where the person had an incorrect spring in their aftermarket BOV... Can you revert to the OEM BOV and test to see if the squeal is still there. Another thought is to check the air cleaner to ensure it is properly seated top to the bottom.

Is it possible to give us general idea of the direction of the squeal From the front...Behind the cab or an idea of the general direction. Is it inside the cab...was the A/C on? Really grasping at straws here.

That "noise" is the blowoff valve leaking! You can get an almost identical "noise" if you vent the stock BOV to atmosphere. (This is my seventh turbo enhanced vehicle I have owned. The first was a 1962, Corvair Spider. It was converted to a blowoff system, and made the exact noise you are hearing!)

I keep hearing folks tell me (us) they can feel the difference between stock, and the after-market BOV. How could this be? The total boost is controlled by the powertrain module (CPU), not the BOV!

Further, I can't imagine anyone could tell any improvement in horsepower by the seat of their paints, as it takes about a 10% increase to "feel" any improvement. And, I haven't seen any, real-world dyno tests, which show any significant increase in HP or TQ by installing "just" the after-market BOV. Seems to me, you're buying niggling issues you don't need!

Hi Alan,

The sound come from inset hood. Not in the cab.
Im gonna put the OEM BOV back on and see what happens.
If that cures the problem, do I accept it as normal?
