I am a new owner of a 2023 Ford Ranger Lariat 4x4 with 2,000 miles. This forum has been very helpful and because of it I had Eibach's installed front and rear at 200 miles. What a great improvement. Now I want the Ford Performance Tune like a lot of other's. I live in California, so right now that is not an option. For other Calfornia owner's, what tune have you installed?

Both the FP and Livernois tunes have CARB exemptions making them legal in California, as well as, the rest of the states.

As a matter of fact Livernois developed the tune for FP and the exemption letter from CARB to Livernois lists the FP tune part number along with the Livernois part numbers.

Hi Dave, thanks for the update. Here is a partial copy from the Ford Performance website:

Ford Performance calibration for 2019-2023 Ranger EcoBoost. The Ford Performance engineered performance calibration is a 50 state legal calibration for your Ford Ranger that increases power and improves performance throughout the RPM range. The 2022-2023 calibration is available for non-California vehicles.
  • 50 state legal - C.A.R.B. EO#: D-431-4 (2019-2021 vehicles)
  • 2022 and 2023 available for non-California vehicles

Getting a CARB exemption takes time and money. Likely the exemption has not been updated to reflect 22 and 23s. Likely Livernois is the same for their tunes.

I would get the FP Tune and by the time you need to deal with Smog you should have Access to CARB Sticker. Worst case you remove it. Not with FP Tune you are stuck with 91 only. Might want to look at Livernois. I use the tow tune with soft shifts. Extra Kick when i use 91 but can still use 87. Maybe try just running 91 and Sport mode to see if the ECU will adjust.

Jeff, thanks for the update. I have read on this forum that there were several 2022-2023 folks that were able to purchase the ProCal tool, but couldn't download the tune. They guessed it is released by vin #. Since I started this post, I have been researching Livernois and I like what I have been reading. I sent them an email asking about 2023 and California legal.

Yes, they said it was California legal. I am going to wait till my first oil change and see if I want to go with Livernois or wait for Ford Performance.

I had my first oil change at just under 5K miles and then ordered and installed the Livernois 91-93 performance tune. As others have said, it is a different truck and a lot of fun to drive. In my instructions, it said for California residents affix the enclosed CARB EO sticker for SMOG purposes. Since I couldn't find the sticker, I opened a ticket with Livernois and they told me the tune has not been CARB approved yet for 2023, but when it happens they will send me the sticker. It makes no diifference, since going back to stock is a very simple process and I will do that when it is time to smog and for service.

Tell the state to stick it and install whatever because vehicles essentially have an exemption for 8 years since date of manufacture, and it takes 10 minutes to pull a tune off the truck?

Sorry, I'm from Cali. I hate the state, and I personally think CARB's Exemption Orders are a money grab by the state that penalizes the common man. I have 7 years on my truck in CO and even then, I can drive past mobile stations twice in a 6 month period and if its clean, the state will automatically exempt it for 2 years once my initial exemption is up
