Yesterday I watched a guy start up his late model VW, model unknown, sort of a crossover maybe. When he started it, the headlights seem to have a mind of their own. He was parked close to a building and the beams seemed to go down, up, left, right before settlling in what seemed a perfectaly aimed postition. Then I wondered if they went side to side, do they turn on a curve? Anyone know what VW headlight technology is?

My BMW‘s headlights turn in the direction of travel. They move into position upon startup as well. I had a 2007 BMW that had this feature as well, so it’s old tech at this point.

My wife's old, 2016, Mazda does this. They are self leveling and turn with the steering wheel as well.

The start up is just the self leveling.

My wife's new Subaru Forester does this. They are steering responsive and cycle at startup.

Yeah, very cool tech. Unfortunately (and correct me if I'm wrong) the US has seriously antiquated headlight laws. The best tech like they get in Europe is unavailable or disabled here. Case in point, my Dad's Tesla has matrix headlights that can actually spell out the word TESLA on the garage wall! They have hundreds? of tiny LEDs which can selectively light up the road where its needed and around curves etc. That being said, they are in a "dumb mode" and act as pretty standard lights until the US laws get changed. I've heard this change is just around the corner, but who knows.

You are correct, lighting laws for the US are extremely archaic. It wasn't till the early 2000's that "Sealed Beam" style headlights were no longer mandatory. The major issue is that there is the law still on the books which require High and Low Beam headlights to be on a separate circuit. It's left the US very behind in lighting technology. Well in general the US is 10 plus years behind for safety and lightning because it's more important that we fit airbags in 80's Hondas right now opposed to keeping up with the Europe which has safer lighting laws.

Self leveling headlights are becoming common and the US has now caught up in just under 20 years of what Europe has for lights that adjust via steering to shine around corners as you drive on curves or turn on city streets etc... 14'-22' Grand Cherokees with LED/HID headlights are self leveling which when off the lenses dip down, when activated shift up and level out.

For the longest time the US had a law that said headlights have to be X watts to be legal. I think it was like 65 or something. Well the early LEDs were like 20 watts so while they were brighter and safer and more efficient, we couldn't have them until they changed the law or started putting 65 watt LEDs in the car.

That law took forever to get NHTSA and DOT to agree to remove it. Now we have great LED lights, but only because Europe was ahead of the design and development of automotive LED lights. If you left it to the US, we would have never had it.

We just bought a 2023 VW Taos SEL with LED IQ Lights. Yes they are adaptive lights. They will turn towards the direction you are turning. They also are self leveling head lights. Either by load of the vehicle or cresting a hill. They are awesome head lights. American auto makers could learn a lot. Yes, when you turn the vehicle on they do a little test “dance” to make sure they are working correctly.

Well, ask and you shall receive. Now I know about self-leveling, turning headlights. Not sure why I have never seen this before.

WAY before 2000 - Sealed beams stopped being mandatory in ?1983? with the introduction of composite housings. Continental Mark VII was the first US vehicle with composite headlights (and 4 channel antilock brakes!).

I had the opportunity to drive around Germany some visiting in-laws and automotive technology is on another planet there. The US is behind in just about all major categories in today's environment it seems, not just automotive lighting - but that's an entirely different conversation.

The new headlights that are weapon lights are unsafe. Especially if you are a tailgating a-hole.

VW calls it Dynamic (adaptive) headlights. If the vehicle is equipped with it (usually the higher trims, like Lariat equivalent) upon initial start up the headlight move up down and left right for calibration depending on any load you may have (like hooked to a trailer) as there are angle sensors in the rear. At night when driving, yes the headlights do turn when you make turns. Some VW's also have a function where either a "side light" (in the headlight itself) or fog light comes on to aid in lighting your path in a turn. Most of the current lineup all have some form of LED lighting, but the higher trims have the Dynamic or adaptive versions.

I work at VW, but I have been "into" VW's probably 30 years or so and have owned about 26 of them. ?

Old tech....the Tucker had an extra headlight in the center of the front end that changed position to the way the steering wheel was turned. That was in 1947 and 1948.
