I am constantly amazed at the car people who bought the Ranger as their first truck and then want it to be like a car. ?
My Ranger is my fourth truck but I have had cars for the past twenty years. I learned to drive in a full size 81 Chevy C10 2WD but have had to remind myself that the Ranger is a truck and what I am feeling on the road is through a truck suspension.

I agree but I don’t think anyone in this thread falls into this category. This is more a, ā€œI have been driving a car/suv now I have a ranger why does the suspension suck?ā€ My opinion it sucked before the swap, but I’m a suspension snob who always likes to tinker and improve my suspension. My first ranger got the fab tech 2wd prerunner suspension w/ added rear sway, my other rangers got bilsteins

I commute from Nyack area to Sunnyside/Long Island City almost every day. My last two cars, 2013 VW GTI and 2016 Audi Allroad, felt the pain on this drive. My GTI suffered three trashed tires, two bent wheel, and two lower suspension bushing failures. The Allroad did much better but you really have to memorize the potholes. The Ranger is not the same ride but I can see what is coming much better and it can absorb a whole lot more. I guess it is all relative.
Kudos to you I could never stomach drive a nice car into the city everyday, but 5gen ranger is a great ride for the city small , nimble and plenty of torque to blow Gypsy cabs off the line

Just wondering , do the newer allroads still have adjustable bag suspensions like the older all roads that always failed, or did Audi get there shit together, . My friend has a shop where he saw more than one allroad ā€œloweredā€œ (adjustable suspension failedā€ and the owners heart sink when they were told how much one of four corners cost to fix, I think most people ended up swapping in non adjustable coil overs but kinda defeated the purpose of the allroad.

The Allroad's since 2012 are based on A4/A5 chassis. No more bag suspension. My 2016 had conventional struts. There is a option for dynamic adjustable shocks, they use magnetic fluid to adjust damping on the fly.
Some people will lower an Allroad as it is hit or miss whether Audi will bring an A4 wagon to the states. I never understood lowering an Allroad especially where I drive. I learned my lesson with the GTI, a fun car to drive but NY roads will destroy it.

I have lusted over many European station wagons, never had the cash to own one, settled on Subaru wagons. I mainly drive wagons or rangers. The amount of money I spent on my forester xt With a built motor running 25psi of boost , I could have probably had a nice European wagon. Someday a 3 series wagon, my white buffalo. What were pre 2012 platforms for the all road? Always thought a4 . Was it a6 platform?

I'm constantly amazed how it doesn't matter how many disclaimers you put in a post, some people just won't read them. :like:

When I first read this thread I did the same thing, but that is forums for ya. Never take anything personally, it is the internet, ā€œThe Internet is a communication tool used the world over where people can come together to bitch about movies and share pornography with one anotherā€. The original Allroad was based on the A6 (2001 - 2005). There are two 2020 Allroad models, the A4 and A6. The A6 Allroad has the 3.0 V6 turbo engine, which is a beast, but it is around $72,000.

Volvo's have changed quite a bit. I had a 1986 240DL I bought used in 89. That thing was built like a tank and had it for around 10 years. They rounded the edges on that year and on but is was definitely utilitarian.

I like my Ranger and the ride. I don't have to cringe everytime I go over a road plate or frost heave.

Never personally owned a Volvo, I remember when ford owned part of Volvo, or whole idk , partnership? Ford took the awd system from Volvo and used it in blue oval vehicles. I don’t like to bring up the fact that Ford was also involved with jaguar. Jaguars today seem cheaply built but they seem to Put big motors in them.

I owned both a Taurus X and a Flex. They were both based on same platform as XC70. I bought them mostly because with three kids at the time in mountains I needed a very safe, reliable and relativly cheap awd 3 row vehicles. Ended up being really impressed by how they tackled nasty conditions. If you ever look at the width of the doors on a Flex (not obvious because of slab side unlike volvo) you'll see what I mean about safety. But the powertrain and electric bits are all Ford, and parts and service are domestic cheap whereas with Volvo you're writing a blank check and just waiting for something to go wrong. When something break on a Ford, anyone can fix it. Really underrated vehicles. Part of the reason I went with a Ranger rather than Colorado/Canyon was my good experience over nearly ten years with these cars, tbh.

I read the disclaimers and I understand you are not dissatisfied with the truck, however you are comparing apples to oranges In vehicle design, construction, and intended use. I think that is some of the reason you received some of the replies you did. You later made a comment about the rear end feeling light and the 4x4 binding in tight corners. All pickups have a light rear end because of weight distribution. Some are worse than others and I have experienced much lighter rears then the Ranger. I had a ā€˜16 F150 4x4 SuperCab 6 1/2ā€ box before then Ranger and that thing was way light in the back. The binding in the 4x4 is because it is a conventional part time transfer case 4x4. It should never be locked in on dry pavement. It is for slick conditions only or for off-road use. The binding isn’t an issue on slick surfaces.

Anyhow enjoy the Ranger. It’s a truck and because of that it’ll behave differently then a unibody passenger car on the road.

I don’t think anyone’s going expectation is their ranger to handle like a unibody vehicle. Physics are physics, Solid axles are solid axles. I once had to drive a Pt Cruiser in ATL because that was all the rental facility had. I can say my frame over ranger handles better than the neon based unibody pt cruiser. Although, both have different handling characteristics , understeer , over steer , and body roll; I’m certain my ranger inspires more confidence cornering than the neon offspring/ small people hurst. I believe ford’s suspension setup decision for the ranger was based on bottom line, spirited drivers notice some funky stuff doing on with the stock suspension, many of the reviews of the ranger point to the suspension as a negative. I’m okay with that because I already shelved my stock fx4 suspension.
I think it is still okay to talk about the handling characteristics of our rangers, ā€œit is a truck , it handles like a truckā€ doesn’t do it for me.
