As I turned left onto a busy road this weekend, the rangers engine silently stalled out or turned off. I pushed on the gas in the lane, and was like “why am I not going?”

I had to shift into neutral and turn the key again to get going. Fortunately I made it safely enough into the right lane with my momentum.

Has anyone else had this happen? Should I go straight to a dealer for servicing? The truck has about 12k miles on it.

Other details: I was in 2wd, with all of the normal settings for the truck. I had just been parked for a few hours, so this was me pulling out of a parking lot. I didn’t have any other issues for the drive home. Auto stop/start was working normally for the rest of the drive home as well.

Was the truck engine off before you tried to turn? I ask b/c this is why I don't use auto stop especially in that situation. I have been specifically worried about that situation especially since I do that exact turn everyday onto a busy highway.

I definitely accelerated out of the parking lot. It wasn’t a downhill rollout.

I also noticed that the dashboard info screen showed the Ford logo when the truck was in the weird, unintentional powered off state.

I had a neighbor panicking recently with the same complaint. He has a Highlander. What I found was the battery wasn't tied down and in a turn it touched something to short.
Check all connections for looseness .

I had this exact thing happen to me a couple months ago, but in my case I was repositioning myself in my seat and hit the ignition with my knee and turned the key off. Scared the crap out of me. Like you, I dropped it to neutral and restarted. I got rid of my dangly key chain and no issues since.

This actually seems like a possibility. I would much prefer to discover it was me with a clumsy knee than the truck deciding to short out.

If nothing else it’s probably worth mentioning to the dealer so they can scan the truck and see if any codes were present. Also they will probably look over the truck as a courtesy given the situation.

My first thought as well. Check battery connections for tightness etc
