I recently notice that all 4 of my tires are wearing on the outside edge.

In the past I have sometimes noticed what I thought was a positive camber on the front tires, so the dearlership suggested an alignment, which showed the toe out (in?) about a half percent on each side.

I'm no expert. Would a half of a degree of toe misalignment on each side cause this type of tire wear? It must be stated that I drive the truck hard, and enjoy pushing the truck in cornering, which I'm sure contributes too.

Anybody know about alignment issues and how much my toe misalignment would affect tire wear? I don't want to be buying new tires every 30K miles, so I have some decisions to make on how I drive, if the misalignment isn't much of an issue.

Truck has had Ford Fox 2.0 level with 265/70/17 BFG K02's since new.

Let me know what you think.

Do you rotate them regularly? I rotate mine every 5,000 miles at every oil change. 4x4 vehicles are notoriously known for causing tires to cup if you don't rotate the tires on a consistent basis.

Yup, during each oil change since new (every 5k). That's why I was a little suprised to see the wear. But being as I rotated regularly, all the tires took turns on the front too.

Excessive toe in will cause the outside of the tread to wear excessively. So what you report seems to jive.

If you rotate your tires regularly, you would see the shoulder wear on all four (caused when they are on the front).

Thanks, good to know.

Find a new dealer! Any mechanic, worth their salt, would give you the correct diagnosis. And... I didn't say Tech Writer!

Hi Paul,

I will go out on the limb and say that your tire pressures are not correct for the tires... There are threads on chalking the tires and determining the correct pressure. I think you need more pressure as I do not think the toe is all that bad but question why it was so bad before the alignment...no excuse on lifted vehicle wrt Toe... Caster and Camber, maybe, but toe should have been spot on... JMO.

Best,
Phil

Looking at the before numbers, the positive camber and hard cornering would contribute to that wear pattern more than the toe out you had. The toe setting contributed, but there is a combo at play.

The new numbers look good, but if you continue the hard cornering, expect continued wear favoring the outer edge of the tires. Though it should be less severe than you see on the current tires.

Pre alignment figures, in my opinion, were your problem. Most offroad style tires are toe wear sensitive. When I did alignments for a living I did everything from pass cars to pickups to RV,s to semis & trailers. Yes, camber will wear tires, but toe is the big setting that will wear a tire quick.

Thanks Harold. Great to hear your experienced opinion.? Before long I'll be getting new tires, and will watch them closely.
