I'm just getting ready to remodel our master bath. I never liked the tile work, very poor quality, or color. The builtin tub is going too... Sometimes I don't know what builders are thinking...well I do know, but they don't have to maintain it once it is sold!

It's a big job...
It’s a very big job Tony! The demolition alone is a lot of work. Best of luck with it.

Thanks!

I'm pretty handy at framing, sheetrock, light plumbing, and electrical work. I've finished two house additions doing all of the above. Same for a couple of detached garages. Hard work, but not difficult. All inspections signed off on first pass. Even upgraded electrical panels in homes.

But haven't touched walkin showers before, and I'm a tad hesitant there. I want the tiled walkin shower gone. Builder did a terrible job with it. I suspect water damage... And I have never tried my hand at tiling.

I'm looking at a custom shower stall to replace the tile work. Gotta find the appropriate supplier before beginning the work.

I may bite the bullet and call in insurance. It will be my first time making a claim in my life. I'm also getting a tad old at 70 to be ripping up floors. Although I just completed a cat walk in my 2nd floor attic space using 2'x8' lengths of OSB 14' up to the rafter joists. Just getting the sheets up into the rafters was a task. Had a bat or two last year! Waited until winter to eliminate the acess points. Too hot and humid in the summer to be up there!

Well, I saw some water dripping from under one of the upper decks of my new place. The underside of the decks are enclosed with a system to collect and drain the water into a downspout. There are seating areas and a barbecue area under the decks so having a typical backyard deck above all that just wouldn’t work. Here’s what the two decks look like and you can see why they are not an open design….

I decided to pull up some of the deck boards and remove a couple of trim boards to see just what was going on.

Thanks, I really appreciate that. It looks way worse than it is. I got lucky this time and repairs will be very straightforward.

I really don’t like this semi-closed system because the pressure treated wood doesn’t get the same opportunity to dry out as a regular open deck does. Unfortunately, it cannot be easily converted to a sealed flat deck.

I will spend more time installing flashing and improving the water drainage system under the joists than I will replacing rim boards and rim joists.
