A while back, I was having trouble opening the key part of the key fob. It would not spring open and I had to get my fingernails to pry it open. Then it locked in the open position and I could not close it.

Last August during an oil change, I mentioned it at the service desk. They said that would be a lot of money to replace it. I asked if it was under warranty and they said that it could be. I said I would not get it fixed if it was not. They did order a new key and we eventually booked an appointment to program the new key.

I dropped it off, waited for about an hour and then it was ready. When I went to the service desk, they said I hope you are sitting down, the cost was $400. I guess no notes were passed on regarding my earlier conversation. I retold the story and said that I thought I might have to pay for reprogramming (labour) but not for the key..

The service agent was very nice and said he would check to see if it was under warranty and that even the programming might be covered. After finding the correct part number, he checked and sure enough the key was covered under warranty and so was the programming, so I had to pay zero., which was welcomed news.

I guess if you lose your key, it is $400 Cdn to replace it.

I am still loving my Ranger. I used it as a truck many times this past summer. We are just entering winter again. I have good winter tires on the truck. I remember the first year I was so concerned about it and had pails of sand in the back for weight and now I do nothing. If I am concerned about traction I just put the 4x4 on.

My truck is now 27 months old, and I only have 27,666 kms (17,200 miles). In 2024 we will be getting an all electric vehicle and my kilometers per month will be even less, once we get that.

Wait, they didn't bother to confirm with you before they did the job?

I hope the FOB was genuinely bad & not the the little roll pin coming out & binding the operation of the key movement.

That was probably more on me, I should have said something before they started, but I was hanging my hat on what they had said before.

I didn’t want to take it part and I guess they didn’t either. I still have the key as a third key. I still do not want to play with it, because it works fine as a key and I would be afraid of damaging any electrical stuff in the key.

if you close the key just a little the roll pin is visible & then tap it into place.
there is no need to take apart the FOB to do this.

I couldn’t find the roll pin, but playing with it, I can now close it, but like the original problem, I have to use my fingernails to get it out of the key fob. Once it comes out part way, it then springs open.

it is now the third key and may never be used again, so no biggie. I am glad I can now close it for storage.

that sounds like the roll pin is working its way out of the key. look closely & the
pin is easily put back into place. the pin is 1/16 diameter at most.

I answered the other thread on this but here goes. I got just the FOB case with an uncut key with spring mechanism off eBay for like 10 bucks. Took the FOB apart and that’s when I noticed grease in the pivot assembly was loaded with fine grit from being in my pockets. Just swapped everything over using my key and for lubricant used graphite instead of grease. Has been working flawlessly since doing that.
