A decent metric for a tank is 1" of fish per gallon. I kept fish up until recently... Roughly 50y experience. Keep tank temp closer to 78 and you will have less trouble with parasites. My last fish was a 12y old pleco that was around 20" ...no algae in that tank.

We have this goldfish we won at the fair that Will. Not. Die. One fish. 10 gallon tank, grew to be about 6" long. It's about 10 years old now.

When we were cleaning the tank once, while the fish was still kinda small, the cat got it while it was in a temporary holding tank. I actually caught the cat with the fish in it's mouth, fangs right through it. My daughter was crying, fish looked dead. But I dipped it back in the water and it swam away. Swam a little sideways for a week, and had some fang marks, but those eventually healed and the fish was back to normal in a while.

Wow that’s impressive. I was thinking one of the fish we get may be a gold fish. I remember someone released a bunch into a lake near us one time and they grew really large. I remember seeing them in the shallows and had no idea that goldfish could get that big.

i raised and bred goldfish for a while and they can be really pretty, live for a long time, lots of fun. they outgrow tanks fast. they also poo like a heard of buffalo. makes keeping them in a healthy tank a lot of work. they mess up the water balance crazy fast. goldfish are a good choice just be ready for work lol.
