I think Bill was supposed to stay overnight but he was worried about the party we were throwing at his house. IDK why because his wife Mary was having a great time along with us all? ?
It appearsDave knows me better than I thought as well. :)

Officially Tracy I was inpatient at the hospital as they tell you might have to stay if you aren’t meeting their criteria for discharge, but from an experience standpoint it felt more like outpatient. I have never had a doctor hospital experience as good as this one. They really are dialed every step of the way (no pun intended ;)).
I’m so glad. :) It’s amazing what they can do these days. I hope you are able to control your pain well and that your rehab is successful!

So I guess I misspoke about being away for days. :)

I am home, resting fairly comfortably, able to get around a little with the walker, have the 8 different prescriptions programmed in the reminders of my phone, etc.

I can’t express how much I appreciate all the support and all the great jokes, laughing really lifts my spirits.

The experience was awesome. The hospital and staff were a perfect 10.

I think it is variable based on individual circumstances, but for me, it was almost an outpatient kind of experience. In at 9 and out by 5:15pm. They had me up and walking about an hour after coming to and practicing steps by 3pm.

I have started the post op exercise routine (slowly ;)).

I plan to go through and answer all the questions posted in my absence.

Thanks again for all the support, what a great group of friends.

Glad everything went smooth! Seems like you had a good staff. Mine was the same in and out in a day. You get a good hospital and it just goes quick and easy. I remember after mine, I woke up and apparently I was supposed to have something like apple sauce but for whatever reason my dad walked into a restricted area and took a roast beef sandwich for me. Was nibbling on it like a rabbit took me an hour to eat half of it in my daze.

And good luck with the rehab too. For me it was pretty uncomfortable, even painful at times but it is soooo important to keep up with it to get back to 100%.

it truly is amazing what the standard of care has gotten to in this stuff.

I was thinking about what it must have been like not all that long ago. The pain level I was at and the limitations it put on my life, I think these things had to really accelerate the natural downward spiral of the aging process. It likely took decades off a person’s longevity prospects before they could replace a bad hip.

It might not be on par with getting tough wisdom teeth out, but closer to that than say heart surgery, etc.

Simply amazing.

My experience seems almost identical. The nurse gave me some pudding after I was speaking clearly and by mistake the cafeteria person came by to take an order for a meal I think I wasn’t supposed to have till dinner. About 25minutes later a grilled salmon filet, stir fried carrots and green beans, rice pilaf and some killer sour dough baguette arrived. I ate that lunch like my male dog Luck eats his dinner. I was starved when I started and just about perfectly satisfied when I was done in a couple of minutes, It was delicious.. :)

I had to laugh this morning when they were prepping me. I had your post in mind about the procedurE. I guess the doc was pulling my leg when he quipped that with the spinal block. If I wanted to stay awake it would be OK. I asked the anesthesiologist if she thought skipping the general made sense? She looked at me kind of in shock and said, “some procedures you can stay awake, this isn’t one of them.” I like a doc with a good sense of humor. ;)
Yeah I wouldn't want to hear the sawing and hammering that went on, ortho stuff is violent af I watched a video of the op they did on me and it made my stomach turn, lots of drills saws and hammers

My doc said they should last the rest of my life regardless of what I plan to do activity wise.

Not sure if that is because they are that good or he thinks I am not going to last that long…. :) :(
Nah mate you are gonna live forever!

Wow yeah they didn't have anything like that at mine! Old dry sandwich in a bag.

In the mandatory class I had to take before the surgery, like a month before where they went over everything I had to do pre and post op, the nurse giving the class said, “if someone shows up taking orders for food, don’t pass it up, even if you aren’t hungry, trust me on this one”, she wasn’t lying. :)

Were you working at the base in Mountain Home when your ER visit cropped up?

I had a little struggle with my Medicare Supplement insurance on my preferred PT provider. They approved the surgery, but wouldn’t pay for the PT gal I want to use for this rehab. I decided to pay for her out of pocket as she saved me a surgery for a torn rotator cuff I got during our Snowmeggdon winter we had a number of years ago.

The private hospitals here were so backed up due to Covid, I considered going to the VA here, which gets good reviews, but the lead times we’re going to end up being just as long, so I just sucked it up and waited.

My father-in-law, who is 93, always says, getting old isn’t for sissy’s. ;)

No, I was traveling to meet with customers, first stop out of Portland was Mountain Home - last stop was the SLC area then fly back home to take a week off. Ended up flying from Boise back home.

Thus began my substantial journey toward medical retirement. Many 'roadblocks' along the way unfortunately, including job sanctions against me, obviously attempting to intimidate me into quitting as they were well aware I had retained an attorney. Otherwise, I was a 'pain in the neck' as I always insisted on doing what was right and not 'cut corners'.

We won in the end - Group Insurance and the Worker's Comp agent didn't make it easy for us. An automobile accident some years earlier complicated the issues, even after we acquired all documents related to the hospitalization and subsequent recovery. The judge who handled the hearing was completely satisfied that all burden of proof had been met and by a wide margin.

Too many people are afraid to fight in these situations and end up unemployable and with nothing financially other than state-federal social security disability/Medicaid.

*******************************************

Two cases in my neighborhood. One passed in his sleep - wife had passed the previous year. A rental home - the owner felt bad about eviction as they were a great couple when they moved in but fell on hard times when their health began to fail. All of his health issues were job related, but he didn't want to 'rock the boat'. Ended up unemployed, no income and on state medicaid.

Another case where an elderly man worked for a local company which didn't carry worker's comp insurance. Whenever the workers were injured on the job, the employer would have the workers turn in the claim under the group insurance plan and the employer would provide for the employee - no workplace injury record with the state as a result.

The gentleman (several years older than myself) ended up in the hospital with a workplace injury. Group insurance handled it and the employer picked up the slack. He wasn't able to return to work, but was a year or so away from retirement anyway. He's doing well enough with odd handyman jobs, help from his kids and social security disability income, nothing else.

Good for you, what was it Churchill said in a speech here one time? Something like, “Never, ever, ever, ever, ever give up!” Come to think of it, that might have been Jimmy V. Either way, probably the best advice ever spoken.

It really is carpentry. Saws and drills, hammers and jigs. For me extra scary as I always was the worst in wood shop. I will never forget the pained sympathetic look my mom gave me when I brought my first project home from wood shop, two of the sorriest looking salad fork and spoons ever made by a 7th grader.
