And somehow we knew it would be Bryan, and Sid that took us there. :)
I came, I saw, I made it weird. It's what I do. At least I'm in good company

Blame the shortage on FoMoCo and it's founder, the story of the failure Fordlandia

https://www.theguardian.com/cities/2016/aug/19/lost-cities-10-fordlandia-failure-henry-ford-amazon
Hi Dtech,

The Henry Ford quest for latex rubber has a Green Valley aspect to it too. Here in Green Valley we have a huge Pecan Orchard. But it did not start out an orchard. Seems Henry Ford and Harvey Firestone planted rubber trees in our Santa Cruz Valley in hopes of having a domestic source of rubber. Did not work, so they planted cotton (This is where the term Pima Cotton came about. Alleged to be some of the finest cotton in the world), then the cotton moved to just south of Phoenix and pecan trees were planted. Today the Pecan Co. is 100% supplier to Costco for example.

So here I sit in a area where Ford and Firestone tried to make go of a rubber plantation.

Best,

I've never read a bio on Henry Ford but plan to. That article on Fordlandia and Henry's objectives in developing it is something that catches my interest, I had long ago heard of the failed attempt to create a rubber plantation there but knew little of the details.
Rubber of course is one of the key enablers of the industrial revolution - without gaskets, seals, tires and so on we wouldn't have the modern industrial era. My initial job out of college was in a tire factory so I understand that area fairly well . a link to rubber shortages in WWII where Japan controlled the world's supply.
