I spend a lot of time hiking in the White Mountains and the number of unprepared and underprepared hikers needing rescue is phenomenal. Basic, common sense items like, food, water, maps, headlamps, warmer clothing than what they needed on the streets of Boston. On the higher summits, it can, and does, snow any day of the year. Mt Washington has the worst weather in the world and even experienced hikers and climbers have died up there and on some of the other Summits in the Presidentials. Most of this is due to the 'gram, getting the perfect picture on some glorious summit or cliff face. Too many people live too close to the White Mountains, but they never learn basic survival skills and put themselves and their rescuers at risk with their ignorance.
