Ranger - why buy midsize?

I've always, for the most part, had Rangers. Except for the 1991 Chevy S-10. (My first truck) I had 3 Rangers in total and in order 1997 XLT Standard cab short bed. 2.3 stick. Had it almost 22 years. Then a 1995 XLT Standard cab long bed. 3.0 V6 Automatic. 6 months. And currently 2019 XL Super cab. 5 years come August.

Anyway, this truck does NOT handle like my Tremor, does NOT accelerate like my Tremor... And does not even give me the thrill of a deep throated sounding V8 when I punch it. Seat is pretty comfortable I must say.

I traded a Ram 1500 for my Ranger. You're right - it didn't handle as well or accelerate as quickly. It was comfortable on long trips; drove it to California several times and a couple of trips each to DFW and PHX. I haven't driven my Ranger longer than a 2.5 hour drive yet.

My Ram did give a deep throated V8 roar (5.7L) with aftermarket CAI and exhaust. It sounded great.

An F-150 is too large to fit into many garages.

My Ram (and F-150 before that) did not fit in my garage for regular parking purposes. If there was hail in the forecast I could get it in the garage but couldn't lower the garage door all the way or it would hit the bumper.

The F-150 and Ram fit my needs at the time but the Ranger works for me now. My wife had a Ridgeline she loved and now has a Bronco Sport - she really likes it but every now and then talks about switching to a Maverick or a Santa Cruz.

My only issue size wise is HomeDepot still considers the 5G as a 1/4 ton truck and wouldn't let me rent any of their equipment that required a 1/2 ton (smaller equipment on a single axle trailer , medium equipment dual axle and the heavy stuff requires a different hitch ) showed them on paper it was more than capable of towing their small Kubota but they said computer wouldn't allow it , but I would be allowed to tow it with a 79 rusted out f150 that had no brakes because its a 1/2 ton ... or was at one time... ? perfect size ? imo... I've done more zipping around in the last 2 and a half years than all my previous ones...

On road this week. Summer time. People traveling. Rentals are in demand. My normal "grab a Ford" was not an option. So.... driving a Ram. (That's a Dodge for those of us of a certain age.)

This truck was built in March 2024. Ram 1500 Classic. Work truck. I mean Plain Jane spec wise. V6 per the performance and sound but haven't popped the hood. Crew cab with the narrow rear doors. (Some of you Ram guys may correct me but assume they call still call that a crew cab. ) Longer bed. Guessing 6 1/2 feet? I don't know Ram trucks. Not 8 foot for sure.

Not sure why, but this evening back at the hotel decided to look at the manufacturers info on the door stickers. Just curiosity I guess. So, why buy a midsize truck? My Tremor is one of the heavier Ranger specs but yet still has a cargo capacity of 1426 pounds. This Dodge, I mean Ram... low spec model all the way so less weight from options. V6 engine. So lower weight versus a V8. Lower weight spec overall as far as full size trucks go.

Bottom line.... Cargo capacity? 1888 pounds. That's 462 pounds more than my blue beauty. Victory goes to Dodge! No argument here. But what if this Dodge, I mean Ram, was spec'd at the level of my Lariat? All the same bells and whistles. Smaller sized victory for sure. For me? No way do I need a stripped down work truck, bigger in every aspect with less performance just so I can gain 400+ pounds of cargo capacity. No. Freaking. Way. Not at my house.

One final item..... This Dodge is a 4x2!!! ? Heck, spec it the same but add 4x4 and then let's compare cargo capacity!!! Ranger for the win.

Why buy a midsize? Because a HALF TON TRUCK is enough for my daily life.

Just remember, the old rangers, especially the previous generation, have a towing capacity of, yes. And a cargo capacity of, yes.

For me, I just wanted something not huge that could tow the boat. It was between the Ranger and Tacoma (and I considered a Colorado, but I'd had a previous Chevrolet I didn't particularly love). Ranger cost less than Tacoma, and I've been happy with our aging Lincoln. Plus, the dealer wasn't charging over MSRP, where (at the time, at least) many Toyota (and other Ford) dealers were. So, Ranger won.

I think the Ranger is the sweet spot for utility and livability and you better believe I'm buying a Maverick in 20 years when they're the size of this Ranger ? ?

The only reason I traded my Ram 1500 for my Ranger is the Ram wouldn’t fit in the new garage. The Ranger barely does. I’ve been very impressed with Ranger’s capability, which I thought would be worse and very disappointed in the gas mileage, which I thought would be better.
