Ok. Been smelling a lot of oil smells coming from the drivers side wheel well and I finally pulled back the wheel well shroud and found this. Been around cars for a very long time and saw this below and have no idea what it is but it looks like a vent tube of sorts that attaches to the oil filter housing(?) Then it is wide open after the turn down. Can't get a great look at it cuz it's still freakin cold in Michigan...anyone know what this is?

Front differential vent tube.
Thanks!

Any idea if vent fumes are common from this vent or am I just grasping at straws with this? It is the only thing in the area that could be providing a smell that I can see...

I didn't smell anything from that area when I changed oil last. I agree it's a bad design.

Now after I changed oil, I had to clean out the built in oil filter drain pan of the fuel smelling oil. It is directly under oil filter.

Retired, work is a four letter word.
I would extend that as high as possible, that is a terrible design for a diff vent

Yeah, next time I change oil I'm going to take a closer look at it and check the rear diff vent tube location as well. The Colorado ZR2 I had before this ran the diff vent way up high in the engine compartment up front and to the gasoline fill door in the back.

If I am remembering right, the rear diff vent tube does run up to gas fill door. Didn’t realize front diff breather was so low. Anyone extended it already? Seems like should be pretty simple to do.

Seems odd that its an open tube, don't these usually have some sort of filter/bug keep out screen?

Also - you guys are missing the point. If you notice the tube exits above the steering u-joint. This way if any oil ever burbs out it doesnt go to waste as it lubes the u-joint! ?
