Great questions, I had similar ones while shopping for mine, but I didn't quite think it out as far as you did.
I have an SUV, but I needed more room to haul stuff, so I bought a 6x12 utility trailer. The utility trailer is fantastic for hauling a lot of stuff, but it's a PITA to use all the time, so then I started thinking about a truck. I often had loads that didn't fit into our XJ or CRV, but didn't need the entire trailer.
Next, when I was shopping around, I was expecting a newborn (he's here now), so I needed to be able to fit a rear facing infant seat. That meant crew cab, even though I preferred an SCAB. I also have a border collie, so the crew cab would be better at fitting the baby and a dog. Although the bed is smaller in the cew cab, ynything that wouldn't fit with a 5ft bed, I still have the trailer just in case.
Regarding waiting for next gen: I though about waiting for the 6G or the 23"Colorado, but the 6 month + wait times, and first gen issues, I decided to go for the 5G.
