Engine should not be cool when changing the spark plugs, it should be warm but not hot.
Why is that, Bill?
On outboard motors, I was taught to replace when aluminum block is cold/cool for torque.

It is so the spark plug threads do not seize to the aluminum head. Having the engine warm, slightly expands the threaded hole to keep from stripping it.

From the shop manual:

Spark Plugs

Removal

NOTE:
Removal steps in this procedure may contain installation details.

  1. Remove the ignition coil-on-plugs.
Refer to: Ignition Coil-On-Plug (303-07 Engine Ignition - 2.3L EcoBoost (201kW/273PS), Removal and Installation).

  1. Use compressed air to remove any foreign material in the spark plug well before removing the spark plugs.

  1. NOTICE: Do not remove the spark plugs when the engine is hot or cold soaked. Spark plug thread or cylinder head damage can occur. Make sure that the engine is warm (hand touch after cooling down) prior to spark plug removal.
NOTICE: If a spark plug is dropped, internal damage may result and the spark plug must be discarded. The use of a damaged spark plug may cause cylinder misfire resulting in engine damage.

    Remove the spark plugs.
    Torque : 106 lb.in (12 Nm)

Looks like they should put the NOTICE before the first step1.

Like my Daddy always said when I did some stupid boneheaded thing that resulted in suffering... "Pain hurts! But it will feel better when it quits hurtin'. Don't do it again!"
"Dat's how he'll learn" while Mom looks frantic.
