The original Ranger Splash was a flare side bed, wheel wells outside the bed. This appears to only be another trim package joining the black package, chrome package and sport package.
That is not strictly true, I owned a 1992 Ranger Sport with the "Splash" graphics package as an option which was the old square body design. It predated the 1993+ version which was a stepside.
Mine was a 4.0L 5SPD shortbox. I had them delete the "Splash" graphic because on the red truck with blue and white graphics it looked like the truck had sideswiped a bridge (on both sides)
This new truck looks really nice.
Here's the 1992 version....

Somewhat confused here. For 1992, with the square Ranger, you could get a sport package. That's what is in the picture. For 1993, they debuted the restyled Ranger with the Splash package available. If there was a '92 Splash, I don't see mention of it.

That's why I said " not strictly true" The Splash graphic was a no cost option on the Sport, but it was listed as "Splash" on the options list for 1992.
I had to delete it to avoid it.
I don't recall if the graphic was a stand alone option on a base truck for a fee or not but I don't think so.
At any rate "Splash" was not an actual trim level until "93.
Here's an old picture of a faded red one....

Not only was the Splash a step side bed, the suspension and wheels were different. My dad had a 93 Scab Splash with the 4.0l 5 speed. I was driving a 93 Standard Cab with 4.0l Auto. The suspension on the Splash made it so much for fun to drive.

My '92 was the best handling Ranger I ever drove, In fact Ford even advertised it as a "Sports Car with a big trunk!
On that subject, can anybody find the commercial with the Rangers and the Tacoma's doing a WW2 style dogfight, with the Rangers machine gunning the Tacomas? Hilarious!

if Ford wants to bring back a name from the Ranger past give us a Highrider…with 2.3 and a manual.

Problem is they are all "High Riders" now since they don't make a true 2WD version of the Ranger.

I love that even on the "high riding" version of that era's trucks a normal human could casually lean with their arm over the hood.

...or over the bed rails to pick or place something, or tailgate, for that matter.

On the other hand, a 1987 Ranger got worse mileage than ours and I would not want to get in a collision in one!

My 93 Splash that was wrecked while parked in 2005. Sadly those are the only pictures I have of the truck.

Just needs a little Bondo...

(my condolences, it's rough to get a vehicle wrecked when you aren't even driving it)

wheres Phil when you need him....
Not sure what you mean, but what I have said was accurate. The use of the word "Splash" for the Graphic in 1992 doesn't really prevent the subsequent use of the term "Splash" as an actual trim level on the stepside in '93 which is assumed to be the case.
