Merry Christmas to all of you lads. Today while driving my 2019 ford Ranger, I heard an odd sounding noise for the first time while driving.

While driving down a road going about 40km/h I started hearing this odd whistling kind of sound. At first I thought it was a car behind me until I rolled my window down. With everything going through my head, I thought maybe the heat shield above my driveshaft fell down and was possibly laying on my driveshaft (half connected, half hanging) as that’s a typical issue with lots of F-150 resulting in recalls. After driving some more I noticed when I’d use my breaks, the sound would go away, as I released to drive it would pick up again. Often disappearing at higher speeds but slower was a lot more noticeable. I have a video I’ll attach to this forum of the odd noise.

I have two ideas of what to check, one being my front brakes, as maybe something is affecting the pads (not worn down yet 6mm left both front), or possibly the splash shoes behind the rotor had been pushed in and is lightly scraping the rotors at certain times. Very odd sound I’ve never heard before personally. Could have the possibility that the caliper guide pins are seized, but won’t know until I open er up and see.

any ideas, or experience with a similar sound, love to hear what you think, and if I should be checking anywhere else I may have not mentioned.

Mind the wind in the video.
Cheers l

Check your driveshaft carrier bearing. My wife’s ranger does the same thing intermittently.
Thank you! Never would’ve guessed it’d be the carrier bearing. I have to do an upper driveshaft replacement soon anyways, so I’ll replace those on the other driveshaft as well.

At first I thought it was a brake issue in the front, as I had to use a shorter threaded bolts for my caliper guide pins when someone had stolen mine off my truck. Long story short, those caliper guide pins are B/O everywhere, even aftermarket.
Thank you again for the help!

I hate thieves… When my wife’s ranger started making that noise, I checked everywhere to find the culprit. Brakes, belts, pulleys, body mounts… Finally figured it out months later. Of course, when we took it to the dealership they “couldn’t replicate the issue.” They told her to keep driving it until it’s constantly squealing, then they’ll replace it.

Can’t hear a thing in the video but wind noise. :(

A while back, a few folks had a noise like you’ve described. It turned out to be a mirror cover that wasn’t seated properly and was just enough to cause the whistle while driving. Once it was snapped firmly into place, it went away.

They tested it by cupping the seam of the mirror housing while driving and the sound went away. Removed hand, it retuned.

I know it’s cold out - just cleared my driveway with the snowblower - but it’s worth a try.

If it turns out to be this, I’ll take a medium dark roast with a single cream and a box of ten assorted Tim Bits.

That’s crazy. I only take my truck to a dealership if myself, and my trusted mechanic doesn’t want to deal with the problem hahah. I use to work for ford myself, but from time to time a noise catches me off guard.

Dealerships are hit or a miss at times too. I’ve tried to go in to check my CDF drum, and they said “oh it’s a spark plug issue”, and kept winding me down the rabbit hole with different scenarios to avoid the possibility of a transmission work order. although I knew it was the CDF drum hahah. After awhile I took it to a transmission shop, and got the proof I was right. I’ll do most work on my vehicle if able without a hoist, but I’ll never touch these new transmission with a ten foot pole.

I haven’t heard the noise since that night, it is very possible it was the mirror, but not too sure until it comes back. Video didn’t do justice compared to how loud it was in person. Granted I also had my phone dangling out the window too haha. Looks like I owe you a 10 pack Tim bits and Dark roast 1C. Glad you get the good coffee too haha.
