Front inner fender wells

What's up with the fabric type inner fender well on front of 2019 Ranger? Is it to deaden sound? Seems like rocks kicked up would destroy it.

Never gave it much though but I guess time will tell. I'm not concerned at this point though.

Fabric used for noise reduction.
They actually hold up well. Have been used in many cars.
Odd thing is on the Ranger the felt is in front only.
On my GTI, felt on rear wheels only.
One would think for sound it would be on front mostly by driver.
The felt does hold a lot of dirty. So power washing helps with wide tip.

On my Mustang, the felt was on the rear fenderwells only. Just the opposite of the Ranger.

How about those out there that push the Ranger off road? How they holding up for you?
Fine. Did t even think about them until you brought it up. So I looked and there like new. I take it out on gravel/rocky trails and they're holding up.

I saw a ranger today that had an accumulation of mud in that fender well.
