We got the first cold snap in my area and I figured the auto setting on the climate control would do its thing set on 76. After about 20 minutes, I just gave up and increased the temp setting to HI which is 85 if I saw it correctly. Once I did that, it actually sped up the fan and started blowing warm air with some authority. It never got hot though. I recall last winter just driving it everywhere with it set to max heat. Is this normal for the Ranger?

mine generally blows like crazy on auto at first then calms down.

what was the outside air temp?
Was 58 outside and had auto set to 76. Was blowing cool air out at 76. Never really increased fan speed until I ran the temp to above 80. It acts like it thinks the interior is warmer than it really is, but thats just an observation.

The thermostat needs to open before you get any heat. How long was it running when it started blowing warm?

It was 35 miles into a 70 mile interstate trip so it was definitely up to temp. Coolant shows full on the reservoir.

My wife insists on turning heat/cool on maximum as soon as she starts her car...I gave up explaining that turning the temp to MAX COOL does not cool faster to 70F than setting it on auto 70F...same goes for heating...

My experience in my Lariat is that the Auto setting will engage the heat pump reverse mode of the AC very quickly to blow warm air. That said once everything is up to temp I am setting the desired temp warmer, 80 to stay warm, than would seem normal. I have also been forced to go off Auto, set the air to the lower ducts, and increase the fan speed to get my feet warm/ dry on a longish trip.
In the summer I quickly have the temp at 78 so the AC doesn't freeze me.
Reading the later posts, I do need to pull the cabin filter and check/clean that as standard year inspection.

So as far as I am aware it automatically adjusts the temp of the air coming out to reach the temp you set inside when on auto. So you were probably getting a blend of just outside air as well as some air from the heater, was your recirculate on? and have you looked at the cabin air filter and blend door? I live in florida so my experiences with using the warmer are pretty much 2 or 3 times a year at most but in my experience when it gets cold it will adjust based on the temp you have the ac set to. For me turning on max defrost will get things warm real quick, I would give that a try

I think auto mode turns off recirculation mode or at least only lets you use it for a short period of time. Will give that a try though. Hadn't checked the cabin air filter recently, but with only 20 k miles it should be relatively clean. The blend door could be a possibility. Thought Ford had fixed that issue by the 21 model year, but anything is possible.

Yeah it does turn it off a lot especially if it is trying to heat or keep the temp steady if its already reached it, what about the air intakes below the hood? Are those clear? If even on max heat it isnt blowing hot that sounds like youre getting air from outside and stuff that has gone through the heater which is odd.

Good suggestions to check! I'll pull the cabin air filter again to see if something looks out of place there. Maybe I can use a camera to verify the fresh air door operation from there.

Also do you have a way to check the temp inside the cabin? if it is already at or close to what you set it to the behavior you are seeing makes sense.

I've got an hvac analog thermometer somewhere, just have to find it.

It does for me, since on AUTO the fan barely blows no matter how much of a difference there is in temp in the cabin vs set point, but if I manually crank it up I can get the full fan speed.
