At the rate they're buying up vehicles I bet this is a mess trying to get all these titles squared away. Sounds like a clerical nightmare for the office staff with so many vehicles in all these states.

They opened a huge facility 5 miles away from me. I remember reading they promised 400 full time jobs. I thought that was a lot of jobs for a place with no sales staff. My buddy runs a few trucks an one of his guys hauls cars for them an he's hustling max hours a day an grossing like 4 grand a week. He's trying to line up another car hauler but trucks are crazy expensive right now. Sounds like out of that 400 employees they need a ton of title clerks. It probably doesn't help no one has a physical title any longer. Everything is a digital title an with lean holders I can see it being a pain to track it down.

Every time we have bought and sold a car they wanted the title - oops forgot it in the safe at home. So it was an extra $50 fee. No big deal. On my last two purchases, I actually remembered the title, brought it with us, and was told, "Oh? A paper title? Yeah, we don't use those around here any more."

Wisconsin still issues paper titles as of last May when I picked up my '21 Ranger. If the vehicle is financed, the lien holder gets the title, whether it is digital or hardcopy I don't know, but the owner never sees it unless and until the loan is paid off.

I had a paper chase nightmare with a motorcycle purchase. In 2001, I bought a Kawasaki ZX11 and financed it thru a Kawasaki credit card promo at the time at 0% for a year, cash back on Kawi merch, etc. Kawasaki USA eventually suspended the program and the assets were sold to some loan company. I paid the loan off, but never followed up on getting the title released. Unbeknownst to me, the loan co. subsequently ceased business. Then in 2018 I traded the ZX for my new 2017 Suzuki DL 650 at the same dealer, ZX title still punched with the loan co. "Happens all the time, don't worry we'll take care of everything, Enjoy your new bike!" etc. Got an email from the dealer a couple weeks later, and that's when I found out the loan co. had folded. With the able assistance of the Wisconsin Dept of Agriculture, Trade & Consumer Protection (and lengthly bureau names), they found who acquired the assets of the defunct loan co. and I got verification that the loan had been paid off, and WI DMV cleared the title. Took about six months.

I'll give a big shout out to Leo's South of Lakeville, MN for their assistance and patience, and for not cancelling the deal or doing a bad faith repo of the Suzuki.

Moral of the story: electronic or paper, get your titles cleared of all lien holders immediately as soon as the debt is satisfied, whether you intend to get rid of the vehicle or not. Now I have clean, original hardcopy titles to all my vehicles!
