I went to install my rear license plate frame and ran into the same issue. Then I looked behind the plastic that holds the plate and realized that piece of plastic trim is held to some sheet metal behind it with two plastic push-pin fasteners. These push-pins hadn’t properly seated the plastic trim to the sheet metal, so I took the top of a hammer and pressed hard against the push-pins to properly seat the trim. I picked up over a 1/4”. Now my license plate frame fits with no issues.
So if are you talking about the push pins that are almost directly under the holes to mount the license plate, i had a little bit of play in mine. Not quite 1/4" though. But that does buy a little bit more clearance. Thanks for the info!

I'll take your guys' word for it. Without any frame, I have about 2-3 mm of clearance. I intentionally ordered a low-profile frame, but it gets contacted by the tailgate and flexes the black plastic back about 1/4"

Clearance is minimal at best, I might redrill my State license plate holes to get at least another 1/4"

I think that's the only viable solution. There is room to move the plate down and that's probably enough to clear the problem. For now, I have no frame and might just keep it that way...
