Hey all,

Ever since I got my ford performance exhaust(Borla) I had an interesting squeal at high rpms, it goes away after maybe letting the exhaust open 5-6 times. What could it be? I mentioned it to the tech, but I never got around to bringing it in. I’ve driven over 10k miles on it, no problem whatsoever, just weird it goes away after driving hard on it for a little. But always comes back after a cold start. Here’s what it sounds like. I know a lot of you have years of expertise and may know what’s going on. I sort of have gotten used to it as it goes away mid drive.. but it’d be nice to have it figured out.

Side note: I think I was the first ranger for performance installs for this dealership tech possibly..? Didn’t know how to load the tune and took some back and forth with FP tech.

Warm regards,
Brandon

Hi Brandon,

I have had from time to time chase down exhaust whistles etc. I have no ability to listen to your recording while on the road. All I can tell you is that in most instances the diagnosis led to finding a burr on a pipe interior diameter over which the exhaust gasses flow. Burr removal with a rattail file was all it took, but you have to pull the exhaust system apart and inspect each inlet and outlet. Using your index finger works great, except the need for a bandaid needed when your finger hits the burr...

Good luck!

Haha, band aid when finger hits the burr. Thank you for the insight. I will keep this in mind.

my guess is a vibration.
i'd check all the hangers for proper attachment and contact.

once it heats up it may be heat flexing enough to not make a vibratory contact anymore.
I will take a look at this first, seems logical as well. Thank you.

From the sound of that clip I would say its normal and just the sound of the waste-gate opening to regulate boost and you are only now hearing it because of the less restrictive exhaust system.

Again hard to tell from the clip alone but that is my guess.

that’s a very good point. Thank you for the insight as well. I’m sort of new to modding to this extent on a car, let alone a turbo truck.

Im not sure how the 2.3 is set up, but that was my initial thought also. On my Dodge 2.4ltr I had Turbonetics gate that dumped to atmosphere. It was was LOUD when it released.

Two different things. Waste gate is exhaust side a d if it vents to atmosphere you’ve got a major problem. You’re talking blow off valve which is intake side of the turbo

I know what a BOV does, ;) mine( WG) dumped to atmosphere and was designed that way.

A 1" maybe 3/4 I dont remember, pipe bolted to the flange and dropped straight down. A few of our guys added pipe past the converter and tapped into the exhaust. That was for noise levels only. It made no difference either way on the dinos or the track. The engine/exhaust notes where so loud you were not gaining much as far low level noise.
