Driving through a big enough puddle in the road has the potential to lock up a motor that has a big open cone filter on it, don't even need a water crossing lol.

Which really sucks if you gotta pay for all that labor. Cost my buddys brother 14 hours to replace the motor in his sentra.
Well in the defense of our trucks, we sit a lot higher at factory specs than a sentra, and most of us at this point sit MUCH higher than a sentra.

So I have probably a dumb question.

Is there any reason why one couldn't take the factory box, and cut it off right where the mold forms into the intake piping (right before sensor) and simply attach a filter there?

The flow of the pipe would be even better than Injens which has multiple bends. You could fabricate a heat shield too if one wanted.

I get that the factory mold also extends a little bit under the molded-in intake tubing, but I'm sure a a small time of evaluating the cut something simple could be remedied.

What sensor are you talking about? If you are trying to improve airflow why are you trying to keep the tubing and cut it off of the box? Just get a bigger pipe to begin with and improve the system.

This sensor.

Also the idea would be a stop gap cheap solution, or hell, maybe it would work fine and not even need to be a stop gap. Just random idea.

That is true, not something I'd do on my daily driver either way. The amount of dirty mud spatter on my motor and on the underside of my hood just from driving down my dirt road takes away my willingness to take the chance.

That’s just an iat sensor, it slips into a grommet on the side of any pipe you use. No reason to keep the small part of the intake just because of that sensor, it’s the easy part.

oooo ok, then the one further down is the equivalent of our MAF.

I might need to buy just a filter and do a little redneck engineering for fun.

Next sensor down is in the driver side top of the intercooler. We have a few TMAP sensors if that is what you mean by “maf equivalent”. They are not near what you’re working on though.
