New to the forums but have been enjoying the posts. Absolutely love my new Ranger Lariot! I read some negative postings about 5 Star tuning recently and wanted to share my positive experience thus far with my recent order.
Order process was easy and I received my SCT tuner in 2 days! It also included 3 custom tunes. The included directions required downloading an updater app to my pc to update the tuner. Once updated you then plug it into your vehicle OBD port to get the factory codes to send to 5 Star in order to receive your custom tunes.
I paid an extra $25 to get my tunes within 24hrs. They emailed the tunes which I downloaded to my pc desktop and transferred them to my SCT tuner through the updater app. Once transferred it was time to load the tune I wanted on my Ranger, the 87 Performance/tow tune was my first choice. I commute and just wanted better performance on 87.
The first attempt to load on the Ranger produced an error code. I called 5 Star immediately (Friday evening at 5:30!) and I received a live voice. He said I most likely needed more voltage during the install so I hooked up my jumper pack to the battery and it loaded perfectly this time! Took about 10 minutes. You can also use a battery charger if you want. I think it has to be 12.7 volts to accept the tune.
I have been running the 87 Performance/Tow tune now for about 100 miles and OMG, different truck! No turbo lag/hesitation during acceleration. Shifts are noticeable stronger and quicker! I am getting a minor bump during 2-1 downshift but its only been 100 miles and hopefully goes away. I will report back on the mileage improvement or decline. This truck is really quick now! Tires chirp easily, lol!
So far I am ecstatic with the improvements! It woke up the Ranger! Hopefully this helps some of you decide whether to tune or not and also gives 5 Star some positive feedback which I think they deserve.
