After 4 months, I finally found something with my new Ranger that is bugging me a bit. I washed it and cleaned the interior for the first time in a while. When vacuuming out the rear seat, I noticed that the door seal on the rear passenger side has two rips/holes in it:

The only thing I can think of is that this is the door the dog gets in. It is possible his claws did this as he was jumping into the seat, but this rubber is REALLY thin. The dog hasn't ridden in the truck THAT many times. Probably a couple dozen at most. It just seems pretty flimsy to me.

What do you guys think? Should this be considered "normal wear and tear"?

The positive side of this is that my passenger side turn signal is dry as a bone after Matt at Canby Ford replaced it last week!

Take a small pic or a large needle and see if you can bring the tear back into proper alignment.
If so then carefully superglue it back into place.
I have done this with older and special interest cars with great success. The repairs were often completely invisible and permanent.
Apply the glue with the tip of a wooden tooth pick or equivalent.

I guess my complaint is with the flimsiness of the seal - it is REALLY thin. Seems like a poor design to me. Dogs jump in trucks - boots jump in trucks - seems like it should be tougher than it is. Has anyone else seen any tears in any of their door seals?

I understand where you're coming from but I have people ride in the back seats of my Ranger all the time and no holes in the weather strips. I'd warranty it and get it replaced and we won't mention it's the doggies side of the truck.

On bigger tears I have used a piece of soft vacuum hose.
Slip it inside the seal and glue it in place.
That is also good for making a splice, so if you get a new gasket save the old one.

I just picked up a doggy ramp which folds flat, don't know why i bought it... I don't have a dog.
But it was only 50¢ at a garage sale! :giggle:
Thought I might use it to load stuff since I'm old:blush:

That'll cover a manufacturer defect...not a dogs claws.

I've had some success with black silicone as well. It stays flexible with the seal. But only if its compatible with the seal.
I had a similar tear on my 2017 Explorer. The Wx stripping was replaced under warranty...

BTW had 12 or 13 thousand miles on the Explorer and it was over 1 year old...

I've done the vacuum hose trick before, it works great....also good for restoring collapsed seals. It should work on the bigger tear, the smaller one I would silicone & if it spreads then do the vacuum hose trick.

When I bought my truck I rubbed them down with silicone spray & was surprised at how thin they are, definitely the thinnest out of any vehicle I have owned.
