One evening, as the couple was having dinner, the husband reached across the table, took his wife's hand, and said, "Beth, we'll be celebrating our 30th wedding anniversary soon. There's something I really want to know. Have you ever cheated on me in these 30 years?" Beth answered, "Yes, Charles, I have to be honest.

Yes, I've cheated on you three times in these 30 years. But there was always a good reason." Charles was clearly hurt by his wife's confession, but said, "I never suspected you. Can you tell me what you mean by 'a good reason'?" Beth said, "The first time was shortly after we got married, and we were about to lose our little house because we couldn't pay the mortgage. Do you remember? One evening I went to see the banker, and the next day I got a call saying the loan had been extended.

Well, I did what I had to do." Charles recalled his visit to the banker and said, "I can forgive that. You saved our house. But what about the second time?" Beth answered. "Do you remember when you were really sick and didn't have the money to pay for the heart surgery you needed? Do you remember that one night when I went to see your doctor? He performed the surgery for free. Well, I did what I had to do." "I remember," Chuck said. "Of course I can forgive you, since you did it to save my life. So, tell me your third story." "Okay," Beth said. "Do you remember when you ran for president of the golf club and needed 73 more votes?"
