@KNI, Does the longer arm tend to be on the downwind (of the crosswind) side to take advantage of the upwind side creating turbulence like with the V-shape itself? Do they take turns, as with the lead bird at the vertex of the 'V'?

Yes, they take turns. They tend to minimize the relative angle between flight path and wind. Going against wind they're on downwind, going with the wind they're upwind. Draw a circle with 120' triangle inside. Attach string to middle and simulate the wind direction with it and you can estimate the preferred side from the angle.
