All,

Quick question about tuning my 2020 Ranger:

I'm wondering if there's a mileage limit anyone would recommend against getting a tune? My truck's got 105,000 miles on it. I'm the second owner (bought it practically new at 800 miles). It's my daily, I put about 80 miles a day on it, mostly back roads. I don't do much towing (if any) or serious off-roading (mostly just forest service roads).

Currently, the only mods are:
  • P265/70R17 Toyo AT3s on Tremor wheels
  • 1" front level
  • Transmission service done for the TSB
  • Driveshaft shimmed for vibrations
  • Regular maintenance religiously followed
Everything else is bone stock engine-wise.

I'm thinking about a mild tune to add a little pep. Leaning towards the Ford Performance Tune because it's plug-and-play and seems pretty reliable.

Just curious to hear your thoughts and experiences regarding tuning a Ranger with this kind of mileage.

Thanks in advance!

A mild tune like the Ford tune will be fine as it's not going to add any crazy hp or tq. These motors are capable of so much more so it'll be just enough to wake up the motor some but not enough to do any damage. I had the Livernois tune in my '19 Ranger and it was so much more fun to drive than stock. It also shifted much better and I'm guessing the Ford tune will help too.

All of the tunes are plug and play. If getting a tune, I would want to maximize my performance per $ spent. Your $$$ though.

I would recommend reaching out to Torrie @ Unleashed. He's very easy to get ahold of and will answer any questions you have. He makes a great tune, I love mine (with @TORQUERULES shift strategy) and he will let you know if there is anything to be worried about. His tune is way less than Ford too.

make sure to ask your tuner about getting the correct spark plugs for the tune you are installing

All,

Thanks so much for all the insightful feedback on tuning options! I really appreciate you sharing your experiences with the Ford tune, Livernois, and especially the recommendation for Torrie at Unleashed. It's great to hear how much improvement you've seen in drivability and shifting. The point about maximizing performance per dollar spent is well taken, too.

I also appreciate the reminder about spark plugs – definitely something I'll discuss with the tuner.

My follow-on question now is this: My Ranger is sitting at around 105,000 miles. Are there any specific considerations or potential issues I should be aware of when applying these tunes to a truck with this mileage? I'm mainly concerned about placing extra strain on components that might already be showing some wear and tear. Any insights or advice on this would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks again!

I have the FPP tune, mostly for a better shifting transmission. I nearly never use Sport Mode any more. The added power is nice too. It is not the tune that would be your issue. Driving style is. If you start driving it real hard at that mileage because it is fun, you may run into shortened engine life. The Ford tune was designed for added power without over working the drivetrain. Other tunes were meant for maximum power.
