Thanks for the info. We tried again last night, and were able to get into the kid's account, but who knows how long that'll last, so it's good to have this info; Quora seems like an actually helpful forum, as opposed to the mis-named "Google Help Community" where our question went unanswered for a week before some bot decided that it was similar to another thread that they've determined has been resolved, and deleted my post; no, they did not actually provide me with a link to this "similar thread", so I have no idea what info was provided there, nor if the question was actually resolved.

I appreciate everyone's feedback; you guys really are the most useful, helpful & caring forum that I've come across, and I really appreciate the way that you'll even go out of your way to help with questions that aren't even related to our principal subject matter.
PS: Another reason not to trust google...they were recently sued for retaining millions of users information that was collected when the users were browsing In-Private. The verdict was they have to delete this info. from these accounts, but who knows if that can actually be enforced and will google follow through?

I don't know how it was stated before, but this is their terms on incognito mode. The last sentence is the catch.

What Incognito mode does
  • Browsing in Incognito mode means your activity data isn’t saved on your device, or to a Google Account you’re not signed into.
    • For example, you may use Incognito mode to shop online for a birthday gift for a family member who shares your device. If you don’t sign in to your Google Account, your shopping activity will not appear in your Chrome browsing activity and won’t be saved to your Google Account.
  • Each time you close all Incognito windows, Chrome discards any site data and cookies associated with that browsing session.
  • Chrome doesn’t tell websites, including Google, when you're browsing privately in Incognito mode.
What Incognito mode doesn’t do
  • Prevent you from telling a website who you are. If you sign in to any website in Incognito mode, that site will know that you’re the one browsing and can keep track of your activities from that moment on.
  • Prevent your activity or location from being visible to websites you visit and the services they use, your school, employer, or your Internet Service Provider.
  • Prevent the websites you visit from serving ads based on your activity during an Incognito session. After you close all Incognito windows, websites won’t be able to serve ads to you based on your signed-out activity during that closed session.
While Incognito mode provides local privacy on your device, it does not affect how Google collects data when you use other products and services, as described in the Privacy Policy.

And as a result of that lawsuit:

“We never associate data with users when they use Incognito mode,” Castañeda added. “We are happy to delete old technical data that was never associated with an individual and was never used for any form of personalization.”

Castañeda added that the plaintiffs “originally wanted $5 billion and are receiving zero.”

The terms of the settlement revealed in court filings on Monday stated that users will not receive damages as part of this settlement, but may still sue for damages individually.

So, Google wins, again.

Does your kid have a tablet? Google Authenticator can be installed on an iPad/Android tablet. This would give them the code while not requiring your device.

For the moment, it seems to be working fine, but that might be an option in the future. How would we go about setting that up, though? Google didn't give me that as an option, so I have no direction on it. The only option they gave me was to input my cell number to get codes via text.

you should be able to go into the settings and choose the method of 2FA and set it to Google Authenticator. Then you’d setup Google Authenticator and follow the steps. (Scan the QR code and enter the 6 digit code).
