Stupid question but I am not near my truck to check the owners manual for a few days but need to schedule an oil change before a long road trip. I have a 2020 ranger xlt. Does it come from the factory will full synthetic? Is it worth going to the dealership or is valvoline ok?

dumb questions but first time truck owner and first time new car owner. Thanks

Not full synthetic but a blend.
Owner’s manual says 5W-30 blend that meets API SN PLUS spec. Full synthetic is an upgrade.

More than likely it came with Motorcraft semi-synthetic.
There is absolutely no reason to take it to a dealer for a simple oil change, other than the oil filter is a bit of a pain to get to and remove. A oil change location might not take as careful a time to do the filter change as well as a dealer (meaning a possible sloppy job) unless they know what is entailed. If your dealer is having some kind of deal or promotion, and your not capable of doing it yourself, your "comfort zone" might just be to take it to a dealer.
If your going with a lube location, ask first if they know where and how to get to the filter. If they look at you funny, LEAVE !!!

Thanks! So when valvoline has options for full synthetic or synthetic blend, it’s obviously the latter, right? Double asking bc I want to be 100%

As long as it meets the spec in the owners manual either is fine.

Many like to stick with what Ford uses, a semi-synthetic blend which is just a few bucks less than a full synthetic.
Personal opinion (just mine) I use and have used full synthetic, any of the major brand names in every engine I have, including lawnmower. If you just want to stick to a semi, there's nothing wrong, but a full synthetic is an "upgrade"
I won't tell you what to use or even recommend as it's your choice, but there are hundreds of posts about oil on the forum, but I think the majority will lean toward a full synthetic.
And remember, Ford does not make or produce or blend their oils. They buy in bulk from the major oil companies , so other than being a semi-syn, you really do not know what "brand" of oil Ford is using. Could be BP this year and Shell next year.

I wouldn't say that it's "obviously" the latter. As Rick said, as long as it meets the spec in the manual, you're good to go with the synthetic blend. You are not going to hurt anything-except perhaps your wallet a little bit-if you opt to go with a full synthetic, and it might improve things a bit. For me, that "might improve things a bit" is enough for me to go with a full synthetic, but that's a personal cost/benefit decision.

Is it worth going to the dealership or is valvoline ok?
If you're worried about sticking with what Ford uses but want to do it yourself, you can get Motorcraft (both the synthetic blend and full synthetic) at quite a few retailers.

I buy Mobile 1 full synthetic when it has a $15 rebate and they allow two at a time. It took about 3 to 4 weeks to get my E rebate and I just bought Amazon gift cards with it. (I've lost gift cards in the mailbox before because we have a community mailbox and when it gets put in the somebody else's box they're not honest enough to give it to me)
The Ford dealership charges $12.99 to use my oil plus the cost of a Ford filter. The last time I went in there they forgot to use my oil so they did another complete oil change using my oil and did not charge me since I had to wait an hour to get my oil done. I asked them to change the filter again since it would be full of their blend. I watchEd them change it but I don't know if they just wound up putting the same filter back in there. They reached it through the driver side fender well to get to the filter. Hope that part helps. I know the Honda turbo uses the same oil and states that it is imperative to keep that oil changed to protect that turbo, so I imagine the Ford turbo is the same?

It comes with the Synthetic blend from tge Factory and Ford says that the Full Synthetic is not required unless you hit extreme cold climates like -20°F. That being said it won't hurt to run Full Synthetic for added protection. Brand choice? I say stick with the Factory Motocraft as it meets all of Fords Standards!!
