Hi

I have a 2017 ford ranger Wildtrak just lately it’s started making a whistling noise on acceleration it usually stops at higher rpm's and doesn’t do it all the time, the noise level Varys from time to time my best guess is an air leak somewhere but having a hard time tracking anything down, any ideas what it could be?

Hi Fredrick,

Not familiar with the Diesel version of Ranger, but a question. Did you just do something like replace the air cleaner filter? I am guessing this is coming from the engine compartment, yes?

The stopping at higher engine rpms might just be overwhelming engine noise drounding out the whistle. Hopefully those folks with Diesel Rangers that lurk on this forum can chime in with their thoughts.

Good Luck!

Best,
Phil

If it's a turbo diesel there are a few things to check. Make sure to inspect all the clamps on the pressure side of the intake to ensure they are tightened properly.

Also if equipped the bypass valve can cause a whistling sound when under boost. On the gas engines this valve is notorious for creating a whistle. There are o-rings inside the valve that prevent the valve from closing completely and when under boost cause it to whistle. Taking the valve apart and lubricating the o-rings with oil usually resolves it. Can't say for sure if this is the cause on yours but it's worth looking at if the diesel has a bypass valve on the pressure side of the intake.

Yes, check out all the plumbing on the air intake tubes. I remember finding a pin hole on the high pressure inlet side that made a high pitched whistle on a Diesel engine once.

Do you have a wastegate? They can get gummed up. Also if you have a vacuum actuated wastegate then it could be whistling at lower rpms as it's trying to dump off boost. Also related to waste gate if it's internally or externally bypassed, it could have a leak there.

Do you have a belt or chain driven vacuum pump? Another option.

Check air filter gasket or any negative pressure preturbo plumbing. Diesels like to whistle there with leaks at lower rpms only.

I have more but let me know those and I can keep going. I'm a huge diesel guy.
