I routinely check my 2021 Ford Ranger XLT for software updates and had a couple questions about correct procedure. A couple days ago, there was a new update so I proceeded to download the update. It took almost an hour to complete. Do our Rangers automatically update if they are within WiFi range (I am connected to our home WiFi) or is it something I have to do manually? I turned the key to "Run" shut the headlights and Heating/Cooling System off, and let the update run its course. Not sure if I have to have the key in "Run" for the computer to download or not, so that is the purpose of this thread. What is the correct procedure for downloading updates.

Thank You in advance for any information and advice!

They will update via WiFi if you have the settings in Sync set to do so. Originally I let it update via WiFi but it was slow as anything and usually took a few attempts after arriving in my driveway for it to complete download and upgrade. Message is displayed saying it did update.

Last 2 updates I downloaded the file over the internet and put it on a USB stick. Put that in the truck app sync USB port(s) and 20 minutes later update done. Then I put the USB stick back in my PC so the log file can be uploaded back to Ford saying update complete. Easier that way for me anyways

First time since I’ve owned my 2019 Ranger that I got an email from Ford saying that I have an update to install.
Great I thought, thinking maybe this time while scanning for updates that it won’t just time out, wrong. Once again no success after several attempts.
Oh well.
