Can anyone help me out with a few questions concerning how to disable the ignition or secure my 2020 Ranger Lariat with push button start equiped with the tech package. My area is seeing a spike in car thefts that was capped off today with my sister inlaws 2020 Kia being ripped off in broad daylight.(I know the new Kias are sitting ducks and stolen like candy)
I have been looking for information concerning how secure the Ranger is or is not equipped for theft. Can I disable via Ford Pass or is my only option the dreaded club? I would like to install a deadmans switch hidden if possible or can the Ford Pass be used for this function?
How ez or difficult is it to steal a 2020 Ranger with push button start ?
Any help would be great Thanks John

Hi John,

I do not recall this being a Ranger problem, but am curious...what is it about KIA and in the Detroit area Chrysler products that are stolen at an alarming rate... Puzzled! Wish I could help more but I really do not know the true theft rate of Rangers. Your insurance company likely does have a feel for this.

Best,
Phil

Hi Phil ( retired Phil who left the forum?)
Yes here in Detroit west (Milwaukee ) Car theft is at a pace that blows my mind. City of Milwaukee and surrounding areas are giving out free clubs to Kia owners. BTW Not looking for a problem but more curious about how secure my truck is or isnt? It would be cool if Ford Pass had a interlock that disabled vehicle ? I would love to ad a deadmans switch inside just to piss off the little bastards when they think they are ready for take off. Like the old days off pulling your coil wire in your back pocket when out in a crappy area lol My truck is under warrenty so not too keen on adding or changing any factory settings or wiring.
I may move from this cess pool I call home.

I have been told the Kia is so easy to steal both Push Button and Key start it is comical. So much it is hurting sales in the area. Its not will it be stolen. It is when .

Hi John,

I sought a workable solution to the time I was spending on the forums to do the "good" job. My life changed and I had to refocus my priorities. I was saddend and worked with the moderators for a more viable solution than all or nothing So it was suggested for a call for help by a post mentioning @P. A. Schilke would give me a notice on my email and I could answer. In the mean time, I have rebalanced my time and have some limited time on the forums. I merely scan and do not respond to most posts unless I see BS, Trouble or something of interest or something that triggers a back story. The @P. A. Schilke has not worked very well but some of that is the nature of these forums as the MOD folks are starting to dominate and frankly I am beyond commenting on MODs other than to if I see offerings that are junk.

Make sense?
Phil

Yes sir As an electrician with 31 years working on traffic signals , highway lighting and interstate ITS systems I can appreciate your input. I have worked on some great products and some complete duds . You guys build em and we help provide the safe roads to travel on. Always evolving and trying to improve our roadways.
Thanks for the timely input and thoughts.

Not much you can do about them towing your vehicle off short of blocking it in with other vehicles.

Vehicles with push button start are stolen by thief's using an electronic scanner that picks up the signal that is constantly being transmitted by the key fob. They retransmit the signal near the vehicle such that the vehicle thinks the fob is there giving access to the vehicle and the ability to start and drive off.

The best defense is keeping your fob in a shielding bag when not using it. At home do the same or at least keep the fob away from out side walls.

I have all my spare fobs and credit cards (they scan the RFID tags in credit cards too) in a shielded bag. When at home we drop the fobs into a basket on an inside wall so they are to far away from an out side wall that a thief could pick up the signal. When you are out and about you have to be vigilant watching for someone looking suspicious hanging around near your vehicle when getting, it only takes a second to scan the fob.

There is the key fob thing already mentioned, but there is also a setting for secure idle, that will not allow the transmission to be shifted out of park unless the fob is present. On my 2020 lariat it was already enabled, but if yours isn't it can be enabled using forscan. You can test it by simply starting the truck, putting the fob away from the truck and then checking if you can shift out of park.

Thanks for the input. I will buy a key bag for sure. I will have to play around with the options . Will the truck run once started if the key is tucked in a bag? Or once parked bag it ? Kind of sounds a bit crazy but prob worth it in some areas where I travel.

Not sure if that would help if they have a piece of electronic gear that is spoofing the fob.

Certainly good if you get out of the car with the engine running and someone runs up and trust to jack your car.
